In this verse Jesus is telling the Jews that before Abraham was even born into this life that he was the Great I AM. Jesus is claiming that he is the God of the Old Testament. For this reason they picked up stones to stone him. Jesus is claiming that he is the very God of the Jews.

Jehovah, though not original Hebrew refers to Yahweh or יְהוָ֔ה. It is simply a matter of language but refers to the same being. Your argument is that because the language included a "J" that the person never existed. Most people who read these translations understand that Jehovah is Yahweh or יְהוָ֔ה. You seem to believe that he never existed because he is referred to by and different name. No matter the name, they are all referring to the same being. If it makes you feel better, substitute it with Yahweh since it is the same being I am referring to. To me your argument is ridiculous. Just because others in history have referred to a particular being in history with a somewhat varying name does not mean that the person they are referring to did not exist.
