Are Christians guilty of scaring people into Christianity with threats of hell? Are non-believers guilty of accusing Christians of too often using threats to convert them? (Often under the guise of, "If someone's house was in danger of catching fire, wouldn't you warn them of that? So why not warn them of hell."

Is the current (too often heard) summary of The Bible Story, Be afraid, be very afraid?

There are battles. The earth has battles, nations have battles, the workplace has battles, and we have personal battles. When was the last time we were assured—or we assured another, The battles belong to the Lord, which is a theme running throughout this story.

I prefer to tell people of God's love and grace and how it makes a difference in our lives, our communities, our world. New Christians/believers will hopefully take an interest in comprehensive Bible study and will learn of hell.

But I honestly don't know a single soul among the many many people I know and/or have encountered over a very long lifetime who came to know Jesus by being threatened with/warned of hell.

I do know/have met people who reject Jesus, reject the concept of God because of the truly ugly, angry, judgmental, self righteous and other unattractive ways God was introduced to them.

The whole earth was a 'paradise' before the fall. When God renewed the recently destroyed earth he recreated a small garden for illustrative purposes.

You don't need to be a Catholic to hold beliefs that may or may not agree with your church's understanding. I'm guessing that the CC has grudgingly accepted different views due to the overwhelming number of them. That's what happens when people are allowed to possess and study the Bible for themselves.

As "hell" is generally understood to be eternal torment.

Generally understood by those in darkness. You see-God is love, not a sadist who could ever create a literal eternal suffering. It was symbolism.
Did you read John 3:16? Those who fail God will be destroyed. As well Jesus teaches -those walking the broad and spacious path to destruction.
