Gov. Quinn signs off on new Illinois legislative maps

The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund claimed the map fractures Latino districts and dilutes the ethnic group’s voting strength. MALDEF pointed to Chicago’s Little Village being split among House and Senate districts as an example.

Despite the Democratic control of the map, the issue could face a court challenge. Officials with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund have criticized the map for not creating enough districts that reflect the 33 percent growth in the state’s Latino population in Chicago and the suburbs. MALDEF has filed lawsuits across the country challenging maps they believe violate federal Voting Rights Act protections against diluting the votes of minorities
