Analyst: GOP voter fraud scandal 'really serious'

Published: Monday October 20, 2008

The Los Angeles Times reported on Saturday that dozens of voters have complained they were duped by a firm working for the GOP into switching their party registration to Republican while being told they were signing a petition for tougher penalties on child molesters.

The switches could impede Democratic get-out-the-vote efforts and could prevent those affected from voting in next year's Democratic primaries. Some of the voters were even switched to absentee status, meaning they could lose their vote entirely if they show up at the polls on Election Day without bringing an absentee ballot.

The story began last summer, when California Democrats noticed sudden, unexplained turnarounds in Republican registration in certain counties and obtained a list of the new registrations from the San Bernardino County registrar's office. They found that more than 75% of the phone numbers given were invalid, and of those voters who could be reached, over 80% said their registrations had been switched to Republican without their knowledge.

A single group turned out to be behind the "slamming" -- Young Political Majors, which was previously found to be using similar tactics in Florida in 2004. In that election, YPM was employed by another firm called JSM Inc., which was working for conservative powerhouse Arno Political Associates. Similar stories involving all three have surfaced in Arizona, Massachusetts, and Ohio.

MSNBC's Contessa Brewer asked legal analyst Susan Filan on Monday about the case. "This is really serious," Filan responded. "This is a very specific, deliberate intent to mislead." She contrasted it with the far more trivial accusations of voter fraud against the anti-poverty group ACORN, which has handed in occasional fake registrations under names such as "Mickey Mouse"

when will the right show their outrage over this voter fraud scandal?

:eusa_whistle: waits patiently

Waits patiently for a legit news story

I am all against any type of voter fraud, including registration fraud....

But when it is a nutbag biased fishwrap reporting it, it is hardly something to be taken seriously.. and I will wait and see if there are any charges brought against anyone, or if this is more liberal whining and story telling.... my guess is it is the whining and storytelling

la times good enough?

Voters say they were duped into registering as Republicans - Los Angeles Times

That article is written so slanted it is not funny.. that is about as biased as Rush Limbaugh on a pain killer rant...

And you only see, in very limited words burred down in the story, that officials really say there is no wrong doing... no... the whol beginning of the story they are just trying to rile up the libbies in reaction to the ACORN issue (where actual wrongdoing and charges have been filed numerous times)

Oh so when FauxNews reports about ACORN, you have no condemnation?

so true, but NONE of those charges were against ACORN but rogue ACORN employees, right? The same thing could have been happening with this group...rogue employees....

ACORN does not pay for each registration like some have said is the cause though....they just pay by hour...

This group in the article does pay by republican registration gotten though...so it could encourage the fraud by the rogue/temp employees?

either way, i don't see how being registered under another party group than one wishes... is really that harmful, these suckers can still vote in the voting booth, democratic if wished....and they can change their party easy enough, to the proper party...?

care

Oh so when FauxNews reports about ACORN, you have no condemnation?

When there are actual investigations, charges etc... I think it is fair to say it is an issue

And if there are charges and investigations to this one, and not just a biased report, I will indeed condemn it... for as I said.. I condemn any and all voter fraud including registration fraud

Yet ACORN itself is being investigated in what, 12 or so states... that is an issue

That's the difference between the right and left... The right is against all voter fraud... The left is only against GOP voter fraud...

There have been charges in California over that case. By the way, he was hired by the state GOP. The DNC doesn't hire ACORN, they are an independent group.

Really? Where are all the Republicans posting this story ad nauseum like you did the ACORN stuff? And where are all the Republicans posting the Montana story about GOP voter suppression?

Oh wait...you didn't.

I can't address this issue in another state even though I travel to Ca. a lot but thats not to vote thats to go fishing. lol Here in Arizona, the voter fraud issue as it relates to the GOP stems from prop 200 which was a ballot issue that was passed here that required people to provide proof of citizenship in order to register to vote. So what has happened here is that when people have been unable to do so they have been removed from the voter rolls, mostly hispanics, and for the most part the law was intended to keep illegal aliens from voting. However, some companies here have been hired to mine the rolls for voters that did not meet the prop 200 standards and were removed, thus the uproar. I am not going to comment on the legal issues on this simply because there is not much here in the local papers on it or the news and the AG is not doing much about it. If however any legal voter is removed from the rolls by any company ACORN, working for the democrats or XYZ working for the republicans both are IMO are equally at fault. I did find a little info. for people to take a look at from a local Tucson source , I'm not sure of the partisanship involved here on the source, but will give you an idea on prop 200.

I don't understand, really, why you need a separate set of papers to prove you're a citizen when registering to vote because the counties check against DMV information, etc. Seems like a silly waste of time.

Still, it is interesting to note that this is the only actual charge of voter fraud that I've seen...and it's the Repubs.

Well here in Arizona Ravi we have a huge illegal alien population. So just a DMV check here won't do anything to prove citizenship. As many illegal aliens have drivers licenses and state ID cards. The intention of prop 200 was to make sure that US citizens voted. I honestly didn't see a problem with prop 200 and still don't if it is managed correctly.

It's legal in Arizona for illegals to get driver's licenses? I did not know that. Here, where we also have a big immigration issue, you must provide so many things to prove you are a citizen that an illegal would get flushed out almost immediately...and our counties do check the registrations against the DMV records.

How strange that you guys issue driver's licenses without asking for some sort of proof of citizenship.

I didn't say it was legal for them to get a drivers license. All I said was that DMV has had issues with that. There is so much ID theft that goes on here, and fake names used that sort of thing that DMV in Arizona is not a good source to know if someone is a US citizen or not. When you get a drivers license you need two forms of ID a primary and a secondary to get one here a primary is any number of things other state issued drivers license, and secondary could be a Social Security card. So it's not like they are just handing them out like popcorn. The intent was and still is in prop 200 to make sure that a person is a US citizen.
