Giuliani-Style 'Shadow' Diplomacy: Par for the Course for U.S. Presidents

Rudolph Giuliani didn’t hide the fact that he was investigating whether Ukraine interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential race. Yet most media have treated Giuliani’s efforts as sneaky and suspect because he acted at the personal behest of the president and not as an official representative of the bureaucracy. The New York Times, for example, claimed Giuliani was conducting “a shadow foreign policy campaign.”
In fact, presidents since George Washington have turned to individuals without formal government positions to pursue foreign policy interests and objectives. Private citizens, often acting as special envoys, have helped negotiate issues ranging from trade to war. While critics deride such efforts as “back-door,” “secret,” or “shadow” undertakings, many presidents have found it useful to dispatch people they trust, who can think and operate outside the constraints of official channels in handling delicate matters.
what a president gains in nimbleness and flexibility he loses in organized, consistent policy. Perhaps some wrongdoing will be found to attach to Giuliani in the Kiev controversy. But the bigger problem for the Trump administration is that the president has had so little trust in his official advisers and factotums that he has had to turn to outside loyalists.

Comment:
Great aricle by Eric Felten.... History supports President Trump's actions and use of Mayor Rudy Giuliani. FDR had Harry Hopkins and Woody Wilson had Edward M. House, Clinton used ex Gov. Richardson.
What is irking the Progressive Marxist Socialist/DSA is that Mr. G has uncovered the corruption within the former administration. Namely Joe Biden and his son and John F Kerry and his family, not to mention their payments through Cyprus.
This has become a double wamy to the PMS/DSA Dems. Trump and Giuliani a deadly duo in darining the swamp.

I hopes he works for the behest of the Prez...He's his lawyer. The Russian bull was another hoax he was looking at in Ukraine.
That illegal?

Except- Giuliani has claimed that he was representing Trump's personal interests- not Americas.

  • The New York Times reported in May that Giuliani was planning a Ukraine trip. His goal was to dig up new information on the Russia investigation and Hunter Biden, Joe Biden’s son.
  • Giuliani’s investigation of Hunter Biden ramped up after Ukraine’s top prosecutor visited him in New York earlier this year, according to the Wall Street Journal. It’s unclear when the visit took place, but both Giuliani and Trump have repeatedly accused the Bidens of corruption in Ukraine (although no evidence exists).
  • In July, Giuliani was connected by text message to a senior adviser for Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president. Kurt Volker, the U.S. special envoy to Ukraine (who resigned Saturday) connected the two men, according to the Wall Street Journal.
  • The now-infamous phone call between Trump and Zelensky happened six days after that text message exchange. Records of the July 25 call show Trump asked Zelensky to investigate Joe and Hunter Biden, and to work with Giuliani and attorney general Bill Barr.
  • On September 19, Giuliani appeared to admit that he asked Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden during a CNN appearance. It was one of several interviews over the past weeks where he appeared to admit this.

I hopes he works for the behest of the Prez...He's his lawyer. The Russian bull was another hoax he was looking at in Ukraine.
That illegal?

He absolutely works for the President.

Not for America.
If you had a client that had one of the biggest scams in US history thrown at him, would you be looking around?
to defend 3 F yrs of BS.

Trump not allowed to have a lawyer?

Trump not allowed to have a lawyer?

I do not disagree that Giuliani was in the Ukraine acting on the personal interests of Donald Trump.

That's what a personal lawyer does is all I'm saying. Does it look like a pile of S?...Yes......Was anything done illegal?...I don't see it.

To add something no MSM or Politician has yet stated:
"CONTEXT CONTEXT CONTEXT"
Guiliani is known for investigating and combatiing corruption and bringing mobsters to justice. =CONTEXT is so obvious, who else would be better to handle, help, counsel, and consult with such an issue?
BUT MSM can't mention such obvious context because it would ruin the narrative that it's somehow an unusual thing to have Guiliani over there discussing a subject he's good at.
Do those same MSM and politicians question why Kissinger is in other countries discussing his expertise of foreign affairs?
