Oh yeah and $15/night rooms. I know and I understand your point. The excessive pressure of nationwide casinos and lotteries has been working on Vegas for a while and as it has inevitably declined the wannabe casinos have never spread the wealth like Vegas in their gambling packages. I loved NV gaming in the 70s-90s. Great times.

How do we wind up with these people running things?
The mayor's plan for Chicago, to increase tourism, is to raise the hotel tax by 19% on guests.

That makes me want to go to Chicago to experience the warmth of collectivism!
The Sears Tower is pretty cool, but I think I'll pass.

Tourist tax often works and it doesn't deter many. They appear controversial because it raises holiday costs. If you visit Greece, you pay €1.50 to €10 per night tourist tax, depending where you stay.

Starting July 24, 2026, Edinburgh in Scotland will introduce a 5% "visitor levy" (tourist tax) on paid overnight accommodation, including hotels, B&Bs, and short-term rentals like Airbnbs. The tax applies to all visitors, aiming to raise roughly £50 million annually for city services, infrastructure, and housing. But Edinburgh is crap, they've only got a castle and zoo, shopping in Glasgow and Newcastle is streets ahead of Edinburgh's.

Vegas is dying

We get comped every year at the Bellagio and the Wynn. We don't feel like going this year; last year was boring. Lot of assholes running around, and the Asians have been going elsewhere and so have the Mexicans and Columbians. Used to be easy pickins for good poker players; now different games are in fashion, and the Asian casinos overseas are much better. No good shows to make up for loss of action.

Every president has a library, but of course, Obama shouldn't have one.

This is supposed to be 2026, not 1826 or 1926.

Chicago has a higher homicide rate of approximately 18.3 per 100,000 residents in 2024, compared to Las Vegas, which has a lower rate of around 60.80 on the crime index. This indicates that the odds of experiencing gun violence are greater in Chicago than in Las Vegas.
Chicago has a higher homicide rate than many other major U.S. cities, with a rate of 29 firearm homicides per 100,000 residents, which is six times higher than New York City’s and three times higher than Los Angeles. However, in terms of per capita rates, other cities like St. Louis and New Orleans have even higher rates of gun violence.
