So much worse than today.. Today in this country the loss of life is much less.

1900 Galveston hurricane - Wikipedia

The Great Galveston Hurricane was a Category 4 storm, with winds of up to 145 mph (233 km/h), which made landfall on September 8, 1900, in Galveston, Texas, in the United States, leaving about 6,000 to 12,000 dead. It remains to the present day the deadliest natural disaster in US history.

The hurricane appears to have started as an atmospheric trough from West Africa, causing unsettled weather in the Caribbean, and emerging into the Florida Straits as a tropical storm on September 5. Owing to contradictory forecasts, the people of Galveston felt no alarm until the official hurricane warning of September 7. The next morning, a storm surge of 15 ft (4.6 m) washed over the long, flat island-city which was only 8 ft (2.4 m) above sea level, knocking buildings off their foundations and destroying over 3,600 homes.

The disaster ended the Golden Era of Galveston, as the hurricane alarmed potential investors, who turned to Houston instead. The whole island of Galveston was subsequently raised by 17 ft (5.2 m) and a 10 mi (16 km) seawall erected.

They had no idea the hurricane was coming and they were sitting ducks

The building codes were non-existent and rescue equipment was minimal

Why anybody would want to live on a long, flat, island-city is beyond me.
Family lore maintains my grandfather went to help with Galveston clean up. We had a book from that era with lots of pictures that used to fascinate me as a kid. Lots and lots of bodies and people wearing masks because of the stench.

I don't think my grandfather could have been involved, though..I don't think he was quite old enough. Maybe one of his brothers, or an uncle...

But the alarmist k00ks never want to talk about anything except the present........because they would look like the nutters they are if they referenced the past!!!:2up: Like any progressive argument..........always goes to shit when you ask, "As compared to what?".

And as of today, here we go with heads exploding in the msm............this Houston situation due to global warming............

Only the stoopids of the world take it seriously. Most people with even half a brain know that devastating hurricanes have happened before in Texas:boobies::boobies::bye1:

it was all natural, a high pressure system north of the storm in Oklahoma wasn't moving, and therefore kept the storm from moving north as was its intentions, it bounced off of it back to the gulf and it sat there and fed off gulf waters for three days. hly fk that's a lot of water.

And contrary to the incessant claims by the global warming hyperbolists, the most recent hurricane isn't "the worst evah!" The reason why the cost is so much higher is do to inflation. A fact you all ignore every time possible. Why are you so dishonest? Your pet theory can't stand on its own without wild prevarication on your part?

Yep..... Thought so.

Galveston was a horrible tragedy
No advanced warning, no emergency relief, poor building standards

While we may be better prepared than 1900, we have been short sighted in our indifference to climate change

Yep.......and if all fossil fuels were removed tomorrow, clearly we'd never see a hurricane again!!

Of course you would......Only category 4 hurricanes would be category 3

Silly dumb fuck. As predicted, it was the precipitation event that has created the catastrophe that Harvey is. Exactly the kind of precipitation event that the scientists have been predicting. You see, in 2012, Jennifer Francis noted how the lack of Arctic Ocean Ice was affecting the jet stream. Creating blocking patterns that kept storms or heat waves in an area for much longer than had been the case previously. At the same time, because of the increasing atmospheric and oceanic temperatures, more evaporation and precipitation events were predicted. Harvey was the perfect storm combining these predictions. And, in the meantime, when are we going to get the cooling you have been predicting ever since you started posting Mr. Westwall. Your batting average is exactly that of Silly Billy in the prognostication department.

And exactly the same type of "precipitation event" (oooooh, such sceeery words) that happens almost every year somewhere on the planet. And has been happening since man began writing about it. The rain from Harvey is nothing compared to the rain from the Great flood of 1862 which turned the entire Central Valley of California into a lake. Go ahead, take a look at a map and tell me how Harvey is so much worse than that. And then figure that the storm that flooded CA, was so huge that it extended to Denver CO.

Harvey is a dance in the park, as bad as it was, compared to that monster storm. And that monster storm is small compared to the Great Drowning of Men (go ahead, look it up) And other monster storms of the past.

All your climatologists have done is predict that big storms happen. We already know that, and those of us who actually read the history books know that these storms are small compared to the monsters of the past.

And, as usual, you are a liar. The St. Marcellus flood was exactly what would have happened in Houston had we had only the rescue equipment they had in 1362 or 1219. And this is not the first such flood this year. India right now, and last month, South Asia have had similiar events. And, in the meantime, we have a long lasting heat wave parked over a lot of Europe, and we are in our fourth heat wave on the West Coast.

Oh yes, and when are we going to get that cooling? Come on, now, you have been predicting it for seven years, so when are we going to get it? LOL

As even someone as deeply set against facts much know, it happens gradually. We are 17 degrees cooler in the mornings here than historically.

And we just had our warmest August ever here, and are going to have our warmest Labor Day weekend ever. That is local weather. Just as your cool mornings are local weather.
