Twenty-nine sisters of a small congregation of nuns in northwest France who were released from their vows on May 23 amid a dispute with the Vatican are threatening legal action on the grounds of moral harassment.

This comes amid a dispute played out over more than two years. The nuns say it began with wrong-headed local ecclesiastical decisions on the future of one of several nursing homes for the elderly that the religious sisters run.

The average age of the nuns is about 70. Their supporters claim the sisters are being persecuted for holding conservative religious views and wearing traditional veils with wimples that are not favored by the Church's liberal elite.

The conflict originally centered on differences between the Little Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Redeemer, based in picturesque Saint-Aignan-sur-Roë, Mayenne, and the local ordinary - Bishop Thierry Scherrer of Laval.

The mayor of Saint-Aignan-sur-Roë has supported the nuns and praised their care of elderly people.

It does look like a generation gap.

So despite their vow of chastity, they got screwed. No surprise there.
