I think the United States should do this as well.

French law forbids food waste by supermarkets

France has become the first country in the world to ban supermarkets from throwing away or destroying unsold food, forcing them instead to donate it to charities and food banks. Under a law passed unanimously by the French senate, as of Wednesday large shops will no longer bin good quality food approaching its best-before date. Charities will be able to give out millions more free meals each year to people struggling to afford to eat.

Agree, this should be a given. Should always have been a given.

And the same should apply to any institution that deals in mass quantities of food, some of which is inevitably unused, like hotels.

Watch the price of food rise in France as a result, and then the price paid to the farmer drop significantly. As a result the consumer will lose once again to socialist policies that have not been thought through

uhh.... why would the price of something rise ..... when there's a surplus of it?

And on what planet does the supplier lose money when prices rise?

Ever take an economics class? Professor Backward was it?

There was a tv doc about this last year. Apparently the Colonel is the most wasteful of the fast food chains.
It is a sin to throw away food when there are so many going hungry.

NO and it seems that you cant see that the supermarkets will need to cut back on produce buying or face large penalties. This will decrease the demand from the suppliers who will have a surplus of unsold food and the price will drop. The supermarkets would increase prices to cover the penalties so the consumer will be paying more. The farmers will grow less as they will be losing money on food unsold. There might be a surplus but supermarkets wont be buying it due to the problems, if they do tyhen they will increase prices to cover their costs. Work it out they either buy as they do now and give away 50% of the food, or cut the food bought by half and increase the prices to cover their costs. Their fixed costs will not alter, so they will need to cover all them before breaking even. So what do they do let people go to try and meet the costs, or put up prices.
The supplier loses because the market is flooded with produce and the buyers can name their own prices.

Yes I did take an economics class and can see where you are failing to understand the larger picture, I did it for a multi million Euro company and showed how by employing contract workers instead of paying overtime rates they could save 2 million Euro's a week and still get the same level of work. The price for the raw product decreased for the company which meant an increase in profits overall. Want to try and educate me in regards to economics now sunshine ?

And it is a bigger sin to give away food that could be contaminated and poison someone. The stupidity of neo Marxists is well known when it comes to looking after the people, and giving away old food is just one of their stupid tricks. So many go hungry because they are being paid to buy drugs and drink by the looney left, instead of being told they will get nothing until they are clean. If this means setting up special live in clinics then so be it, the savings from welfare would offset the costs involved ( at present they get around £ 600 per month disability, £600 housing and then JSA at £200. This is £1400 a month which is more than most people working get ) Maybe a tax on waste from food outlets is the way to go, or bring back pig swill bins to offset costs.

Asda's £3.50 Wonky Veg Box Lets You 'Feed Your Family For A Week'
In the UK they are selling off odd shaped veg. This is in response to a BBC prog which highlighted how the supermarkets are wasting good fresh food.

Preposterous. What "large penalties"?? All they're required to do is channel that stuff into where it can be used instead of throwing it away. Which is just common sense anyway.

How the fuck do you get "large penalties" out of that?

Sin City
The food going to waste here in the USA is staggering. Because of government rules and regulations at all levels, many stories and food outlets have no choice but to throw out tons upon tons of perfectly good food.

The same holds true with this stupid "sell by" date placed on food items. This is perfectly good food that could go to the same ones who use their food stamps to buy cigarettes and booze.

I worked for a catering company many years ago that would take extra food to a rehab center in the city. Eventually the center refused to accept anything not in it's original packaging. Fear of lawsuits. It's a shame, the residents never ate better than when we showed up.

In the UK when the neo Marxists get control, it was the payment to the great unwashed rent-a-mob who would fail their degree courses.

Same in the UK because of HSE laws, anything that could affect the health of someone is illegal. So if you "find" food in a dumpster and give it away to people with food allergies then you are guilty of a crime. So are the outlet who dumped the food without proper security.
