You seem to be about my age (mid-50s), back when I was a kid nobody used the two words interchangeably. It was always sex that was used.

It is my opinion that this changed in the late 70s and early 80s with the moral majority pushing it as the word "sex" was seen as "dirty" and not a word they wanted to use. Thus they started to use the term gender instead.

What we have today is the end result of that
