Florida shows real genius, gonna put kids to work!

Now they are deporting Floridas workforce the intention is to fill the gap with even lower paid kids without protections or even breaks - on schoolnights.
What they can learn in a Florida school is moot but they should probably be there rather than on the plantation.

More gifts for the oligarch class.

Did you have a job as a child?

The title and the article is misleading. The bill is geared towards 16-17 year olds. The bill itself reads:

Minors 15 years of age or younger may not be
32 employed, permitted, or suffered to work for more than 4 hours
33 continuously without an interval of at least 30 minutes for a
34 meal period; and for the purposes of this law, a period of less
35 than 30 minutes is not deemed to interrupt a continuous period
36 of work.

The article refers to a law that is already in place that exempts minors who are home schooled - so that's where they get "14 year olds could be working overnight shifts in Florida".

To put it in perspective, only 4.6% of students in Florida are home schooled. Meaning 95%+ of 14 - 15 year olds in Florida will not be allowed to work long, overnight shifts.
The real question is do those jobs need to be done? Huge wonder

In most parts of Florida there is typically a high demand for restaurant jobs, fast food restaurant jobs, warehouses, grocery stores, department stores, etc

summer jobs was not what i was talking about. this is overnight - during the school year - during the school week.
Like I said, if an enterprising 16-year-old wants to work and keeps up with his studies, let him. Also like I said, no one is going to force teenagers to get a job. If their families are in poverty, they can work a job to not only help the family but escape the situation. From where do you get the insane idea that allowing teenagers to work is forced child labor?

It's insane to think that.

How are they going to "fill the gap" when no one is going to force any teenager to work?

You failed to fill in that gap in your faux analysis.

Kids will have to work in order to pay their parents excessive home insurance.

Homeowners insurance isn't really that big of a deal here as long as you don't put a house on a steep hillside prone to mudslides or on a coastline that gets hammered by hurricanes. But, hey, be sure to let us know when your favorite hate sites start bleating that American children are being forced to "work in order to pay their parents excessive home insurance" so we can laugh at you.

Republicans are already changing child labor laws so girls as young as 14 can serve liquor in some states, and high school age children can work in dangerous conditions. The idea of 14 year olds serving liquor is fraught with all kinds of dangers for these young girls.

When I was 14, I lied about my age and got a job as a waitress in the local afterschool diner/restaurant. I still remember guys coming on to me on a daily basis, and we weren't serving liquor. Adult women are told to wear low cut tops, and to be "friendly" to patrons so they'll get higher tips.

When you say "no one is going to force any teenager to work", you reveal just how stupid and gullible YOU are. I lied about my age because my father died when I was 11 and my mother cried at night after she thought I was asleep, because she had no money. I got that job to pay for my books and clothes for school, because I would never ask my mother for money for anything. Nobody "forced" me to work either, but I did.

In other words jobs that can sit unfilled with no effect.

how is your story NOT an argument FOR the bill?

14 iscway too young to be working. So is 16 for that matter. Plus they bring down wages at a time when we need wage increases across the board.

i recall (in my 20s) working in a resteraunt that had a 15 year old working as a hostess.

She struggled. But mostly did ok.

Plenty of 16 ish kids working there, who did fine.

Most jobs would not be good for a 14 year old, but some, would be fine. Especially in family businesses.

I started working at 14. Teens commonly held jobs in the past. It was good for them and good for the economy.
