Florida Senate Discussing Tax Hike For EV Owners

Makes sense
Drivers should pay for the roads they use

But Florida?
How much road maintenance is there in Florida?

They don’t have to plow snow or salt the roads
The roads don’t go through freeze/ thaw cycles
One thing I remember about going there a couple of times was how smooth the roads are.

With the current rough winter an EV might get swallowed by a pothole here. Only January and the roads are like driving on washboarded gravel roads.

EVs don’t have suspensions?

The move intends to collect taxes for road maintenance that ICE users pay for at the pump

The state of Florida might soon impose a new tax specifically aimed at EV owners. Those in the state who drive internal combustion-powered vehicles already pay a state tax when they fuel up. Florida would be one of more than 30 states in the USA to implement such an EV tax should the legislation pass.

Adding a fee specifically for EV owners would be in addition to the one that they already pay for any regularly registered vehicle in the state. According to The Center Square, hybrid vehicles could also end up having a fee associated with them despite the fact that they already pay for fuel. Evidently, that fee would be less than the one imposed on EV owners.

According to Committee Chair Sen. Nick DiCeglie, some 31 states have already seen similar legislation filed. That includes fees ranging between $45 and $200 depending on the state and the vehicle in question. Different states determine the fee in different ways, sometimes basing it on vehicle size and other times on drivetrain components.

Makes some sense from a revenue standpoint because charging at home is the equivalent of running farm diesel (no tax) in your truck and EVs put wear and tear on the roads the same as a ICE vehicle.

Some have pointed out that one of the biggest incentives powering EV sales is the no road tax on the "fuel" they currently use.

Dems should be on board since they like more taxes.....Am I right?
;)
If an EV owner isn't paying for building and maintaining the roads they drive on through the fuel tax then they are nothing but welfare queens.

I am usually against any increase in taxes but in this case we should tax the hell out of the idiots.

Makes sense

That is what a gas tax does. The more miles you drive, the more gas taxes you pay
so you are ok with the federal government monitoring everywhere you go? because it won't just track the number of miles, it will track your every movement in your car.

Just report your mileage every year.
If you try to cheat, it will eventually catch up with you
why is it anyones business how man miles you drive or where you go. put a tax per kilowatt on recharging the EVs to make them pay their share of road expenses. How many new federal employees would have to be hired to track everyones mileage and send bills for taxes? ridiculous idea.

That is a bad policy.

Gasoline taxes are directly tied to consumption - drive more, use more roads, pay more tax. OK.

Registration tax would be the same no matter use - drive more, use more roads, pay same as someone who barely uses the car. It's ridiculous.

Fair way to do this would be to tax electricity used for charging, which ties into being able to incentivise specific charging times to optimize grid use.

Because the miles on your vehicle are relevant

States would record your mileage when you renew your registration. Won’t take any new people
It is all automated

Great idea. :Et the faddists pay for all that bullshit out of tier own pockets and quit subsidizing rich peoples fashion toys. They all have giant SUVs and sports cars in their garages next to the Federally subsidized EV.

They can also be billed fees for the damages and deaths caused by the power outages their hobby cars are going to generate.. Just divide the costs to the state by the number of EVs and send them the bills.
