The bill, dubbed the “Kamala Harris Truth in Slavery Teaching Act,” was introduced by Tampa Bay Republican Senator Blaise Ingoglia Wednesday.

If passed, it would require students learn that Democrats were the “party of slavery,” Ingoglia said.

Ingoglia tells Channel 9 the impetus of the bill was the Vice President’s visit to Jacksonville last summer where she blasted the new African American History Standards.

The new standards state “instruction includes how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.”

“One of the things that she [Harris] said was that we expect when we send our children to school, that they get taught the truth.

So the truth is, is that the democrat party was, in fact, the party of slavery,” Ignoglia said.

It would require students learn about the sociopolitical circumstances surrounding slavery-- including the political parties’ stances.

--Slavery was mostly cruel, hard, indefensible, reprehensible and no person with integrity living today can defend any aspect of it.
--All slaves, however, were not mistreated and in their day and in the culture of that time--slavery was still common throughout much of the world--some were loved and lived reasonably good lives. It is possible, even likely, at least some of those would not have wanted it to be any other way as they lived better than the conditions under which many free black people lived.
--Many slaves, as slaves, did learn useful trades and that served them well once they were given their freedom.
--The odds are huge that those descended from American slaves have had opportunity for far more freedom, choices, opportunity, prosperity than if their ancestors had been left in Africa and they had been born there.
--White people who opposed slavery and risked or gave all to end slavery in America significantly outnumbered those who owned slaves or supported slavery. And a number of wealthier free black people also owned slaves.
