Drop Everything And Immediately Cover Your Computer's Webcam, FBI Director Says

When the current FBI director James Comey says he places a piece of tape over his computerā€™s webcam, maybe itā€™s time that you should, too.

When asked recently at a talk in Washington D.C. about his own personal security regime, Comey told the moderator, ā€œI think people just need to continue to be sensible in their own sort of security hygiene and asking good questions and not assuming that somebody else has thought about this or someone else has taken care of their security."

Questioned further, Comey acknowledged that he does indeed tape his webcam to keep potential hackers from peering into his home and office. Comey said:

ā€œHeck yeah, heck yeah. And also, I get mocked for a lot of thingsā€¦ much mocked for thatā€¦ but I hope people lock their cars [ā€¦] lock your doors at night. I have an alarm system. If you have an alarm system you should use it, I use mine. Itā€™s not crazy that the FBI Director cares about personal security as well.ā€

Comeyā€™s remarks came during a talk at the Center for Strategic and International Studies on national security issues, including his role in the Clinton e-mail scandal.

This isnā€™t the first time Comey said he covers his webcam. In April, Comey was mocked on Twitter for telling students at Kenyon College that he saw others taping their cameras so he decided to do so as well.

ā€œI saw something in the news, so I copied it,ā€ he said. ā€œI put a piece of tape ā€” I have obviously a laptop, personal laptop ā€” I put a piece of tape over the camera.ā€

Comey is not the only high-profile figure to go to such lengths to protect his or her privacy. Back in June, observant journalists noted Facebookā€™s Mark Zuckerberg had taped his webcam (and microphone).

I started doing this years ago when I first read an article on webcam hackers, and people thought I was crazy. Granted, hackers have little reason to spy on somebody like me as opposed to James Comey or Mark Zuckerberg, but that tape is staying on my camera.

Use a business card holder and just slide it over when you don't want to use the camera.
Cell phones, keep them in a pocket or purse. use a silicone adhesive that rinses clean for reuse with water and stick that over the lens.

You want to spy on your house for security but then so can anyone that hacks in.

Turn the camera off or delete the software and carry a separate camera instead

You have decide if there is something you are afraid others will see and use or if you just use basic common sense

Just like Comey the political hack and scared little pencil neck can't stop the bad guy so he says hide from the bad guy he can't stop. Comey needs to be fired! He is making the FBI look like the IRS and the DMV.
