The President does not have power to "fire" the director of the FBI. Remember that guy J. Edgar Hoover? More than one President would have liked to fire that bastard.

FBI Directors are nominated and confirmed for a ten-year term, SPECIFICALLY so that their tenure will not be impacted by politics.

All a President can do is make life uncomfortable for the Director, and in today's climate, being hated by President Trump would make him a virtual Folk Hero in the DC Swamp.

Even if credible evidence surfaces, doubtful he will be prosecuted for it, it's a foolish proposition to prosecute the guy that knows where the bodies are buried, and an FBI director generally speaking knows where the bodies are buried.

I imagine Congress Critters and Washington establishment flunkies would lose their minds if anyone even suggested deposing Wray pursuant to a criminal investigation of him.

I share your sentiment but at the same time it's useful to recognize political realities, going after Wray would cause a political shitstorm which IMHO isn't worth it, President Trump has a broad reform agenda he wants to enact and should focus on getting those things done.

You're missing the point, Wray will be taken out since he'll either resign or be fired, however if you go after him criminally everybody in Washington is potentially exposed by what Wray knows and will thus fight tooth and nail to keep him from being deposed.

Politicians and the assorted miscreants in Washington don't know what Wray knows about them and thus what he might reveal pursuant to a criminal case against him. He has what is commonly referred to as "leverage".

IMHO the last thing President Trump needs to do is throw a monkey wrench into his own agenda. He should accept Wray's resignation or fire him and then wave goodbye to him.
