I'm sitting in Germany now. Been here about a week.
I rented a VW Golf wagon from Hertz. Diesel, 6-speed stick. What a fantastic drivetrain! It is smooth, quiet, powerful, and amazingly efficient. It automatically shuts down at stop lights if you put the car in neutral and let out the clutch. As soon as you re-engage it starts right up. Most newer cars here seem to be doing the same thing - even automatics, which I have to figure out. (I guess since golf carts have been doing this for ages, it's no big deal).
They are still making a VW Scirocco over here. I don't know what engine is in it, but it is a great looking sports coupe. I wonder why they don't export it to the U.S.
Two of my work buddies rented BWM X1's, also diesels, but automatics.
You don't see many American cars over here, and many of them have diesel engines that are not available in the U.S. I saw a Ford Escort the other day, but the nameplate on it said, "Maverick." I got a kick out of that one.
