No, the economy is in the shitter because we've over extended ourselves in debt to income. And the housing crash is a prime example, AND is helping to keep our economy in the shitter. Many, many, many jobs are related to the construction industry, and with the overabundance of inventory there isn't much being constructed right now.

Things won't balance out until the excess inventory is taken out of the market and new construction begins again.

There are positive signs that this is beginning to happen, with new commercial construction seeing a slight uptic. But residential construction, which is the largest chunk of it, ain't movin'.

Saw it with the Dutch Tulipmania in the 1800's, saw it again with the 1920's Stock Market craze and crash in 1929. Same cause, same result.
Remind yourself that last week saw the worst Thansgiving Week performance in the markets since 1932. Remember what that week in 1932 was like? FDR had just defeated Herbert Hoover in the Presidential election but would not be inaugurated until March, 1933. During that period 100 banks across the nation would fail. People in places like Salt Lake City would be forced to use scrip because no one had any cash to use for financial transactions.
