Ecuador Cuts Off WikiLeaks Founder’s Outside Communications

Julian Assange has been stripped of his internet access for violating the terms of the asylum.

Ecuador is cutting off WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s communications with the world outside the London embassy where he’s been living in asylum since 2012.

Ecuadorean officials announced Wednesday that they had enacted the limits in response to his recent social media activity, which they say jeopardizes their relationship with the U.K.

The world-famous hacker agreed in late 2017 not to send any messages that could interfere with Ecuador’s relations with other nations, the announcement said. The statement did not highlight any of Assange’s offending posts.

However, in recent days Assange has tweeted about his disapproval with several countries, including the U.S., for their decision to expel Russian diplomats in response to the poisoning of a Russian ex-spy in the U.K. earlier this month.

On Tuesday, British foreign affairs minister Alan Duncan spoke out against Assange’s ongoing asylum.

“It’s about time that this miserable little worm walked out of the embassy and gave himself up to British justice,” he told reporters.

That doesn't strike me as an unreasonable position for Ecuador to have taken, but managing uncertainty doesn't bother me, and I'm not given to expressing thoughts without thinking about their implications before sharing them. The latter is something with which Assange has long struggled; it's epicentral to why he's stuck in Ecuador's embassy rather than enjoying London or some other wonderful city, town or hamlet.
