CDZ Difference between Democratic Socialism and Communism

Recently, another thread I started got sidetracked over an argument as to whether Democratic Socialism and Communism amounted to the same thing. So, thought I'd make this thread to discuss the difference, in case anyone is still interested. The following is an excerpt from an article at time.com:

How is democratic socialism different from socialism and communism in the former Soviet Union and other countries abroad?
The simple answer is that democratic socialists believe in a democracy, while communist forms of government are not democracies.

“Democratic socialists believe in elections, the First Amendment — [they] want ordinary people to have more power in a more democratic system,” Kazin says. “In communist countries, the state controls everything and a small group of people control the state, a tyrannical system.”

Confusion is understandable, however, because the USSR did stand for Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. But for context, here’s how Kazin explains when the distinction started to be made between socialism and communism: “All communists call themselves socialists because they want it on the way to pure communism.” But, he explains, the Bolshevik revolution in Russia in 1917 caused a split between those who identified primarily as communist and those who identified as socialist. In 1919, the Bolsheviks formed the Comintern (Communist International), an international organization of communist parties and groups. Those who wanted to follow in Russia’s footsteps joined, essentially declaring themselves communist, while others decided to stick with socialism.

Democratic Socialism is actually not really that popular...

Social democracy is really what is being proposed by the likes of Sanders....

Oh come on. Quora is childish bullshit. You can't rely on it for accuracy.

It's interesting how people see the word "social" in "social democracy" and they think it's close enough to consider it to be "socialism".

Social democracy is capitalism with socially-beneficial programs to "soften" it and make it more tolerable.

Democrat socialists are like the scientist in the B-monster movies, like the original "The Thing,".....they protect the monster thinking they can control it....communism is simply the monster in its true form, not hiding what it is........

You'll see the democrat socialist in this clip....he is the one protecting the monster...

Not a fan of the extremes of either party, they make the most noise & keep the two major party's from working together towards any solutions that would benefit the majority. By focus on party political advantage What really happens is those with the most money support policy's that work best for them self's, IF you don't believe that those who get them the job & help keep them there have more power, you are not paying attention. The population of those with billions has grown & been sucking up resources. This is noticeable by the shrinking of our middle class. & the growing poverty in the bottom quarter of our population.

That is interesting. But the topic of the thread refers to democratic socialism, not social democracy.

Great. Then tell "CowboyTed" who posted just before me. Are you some kind of a cop?
I am. Always there to bust anyone caught equivocating in public.

:smoke: Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

I use Quora to explain it is simpler english but the difference is very clear...

There are plenty of sources on the web about the differences... US doesn't seem to get it, Europe is mainly Social Democratic countries and have no problem saying that...

Another name for Social Democracy is Regulated Capitalism...

Problem is you are trying to say that US is being taken over by Democratic Socialism, that is untrue...

Even Bernie Sanders who calls himself that isn't actually that in vast majority of his policies... He is more Social Democrat....

So you thread is like objecting to a monarchy, it just doesn’t really exist in any type of mainstream politics...

You are just using boogyman politics...

Sanders says the unicorn rainbow kittens and puppies crap he does because he knows it'll attract ignorant people who have no idea how government works; they just want free stuff. He's manipulating them. It's funny -- the very minute he became a millionaire, he stopped complaining about millionaires and stuck only to billionaires.

How many houses does he have now?

Sanders like it or not is pointing to a country which he believes is performing better than America, Sweden... Personally I think he should be pointing at Germany which is the best performing economy in Europe with numbers that US would love to have...
I seriously don't give a crap how much Bernie Sanders has in the bank because Social Democracy allows(promotes) for people to be successful while still understanding there obligation to society..

You have incorrectly equated fulfilling you obligation to your society as being poor when actually the opposite is closer to the truth. There isn't a large middle and upper class in Somalia...

And if Democrats get their way, there won't be one in America, either. There will be wealthy Democrat oligarchs, and everyone else will be dependent on government.

Exactly how would that work? Do you think all Democrats expect that they specifically will be oligarchs at the expense of all the other Democrats?

Your premise doesn’t stand up...

GOP were the ones for tax cuts which 80%+ went to the rich... Who came up with triclr down economics?

White the social democratic countries have less income inequality than US...

So please get yourself informed as you are voting against your wishes..

You don't know shit about what's best for me. That's the problem with y'all. You can't think for yourselves, but believe you're qualified the make decisions for everyone else.

Democratic socialism looks much like Republican socialism.

You were complaining that "There will be wealthy Democrat oligarchs, and everyone else will be dependent on government."...

I was showing you that GOP policies was pushing America closer to that except:
"There will be wealthy Republican oligarchs, and everyone else will die"...

GOP present policies is about doing what lobbyists want and putting power and money in their elites hands... Think about it, who cam up with and promoted trickle down economics...

Democrats who are far from perfect at least want to work against income inequality, want a larger middle class with affordable Healthcare, Education,....

So you say you want something but vote against your own wishes...

Why do you support income inequality and then complain about elites?
