You guys like to pretend that politics is a spectator sport, that's more or less how most of the US media represent it, as a team sports game, where we all "root" for our favorite "team" and love to wallow in the gossip about the "players" and the "coach" and so on.
This is the way antillectualism works, it is at its most developed here in the US, where name calling, lying, fear and bigotry are the tools of the trade, as masterfully demonstrated by republicans.
There's little serious discussion, in most cases trump is allowed to get away with lying through his teeth every day and it's just seen as part of the game. People like trump don't want people to think, to be critical of his claims, to seriously question his claims, no, that's not how we play the game here in the US, insults, lies, fear and conspiracy is what the public are expected to engage in, anyone who doesn't is rejected as a "loser" or "marxist" and so on.
Outside the US trump is seen as a buffoon, a person few would take seriously, and he's the butt of jokes and ridicule much of the time.
