I've never been a fan of Timothy Chalamet. My daughter really likes him, and I tease her by calling Chalamet "Emo Boy".

But I have to give it to him in this movie. Emo Boy has some acting chops.

I kept hearing raves about this movie, but who wants to watch a movie about ping pong? But since it showed up on HBO without a fee, I decided to check it out.

The movie takes place in 1952, not long after we defeated Japan (which is a plot point). It turns out to be about a lot more than ping pong.

The life of Chalamet's character, Marty Mauser, is a non-stop train wreck. The guy lives in poverty and moves from one disastrous grift to another, with things going from bad to worse, and destroying every friendship he has along the way.

Mauser's lifelong dream is to win the world table tennis championship, and he has the cocky attitude and skills to do it. But he has a money problem, and that is where all his calamities stem from.

Kevin O'Leary of Shark Tank makes his film debut in this movie. He does a very good job.

Penn Jillette makes a cameo, and I almost didn't recognize him.

Gwyneth Paltrow plays O'Leary's wife who is a formerly famous actress of the 1930s.

This is not based on a true story, which I somehow thought it was. It was inspired by an actual person, though.

Marty Supreme has a 93/82 critic/audience score.
