Island nations like Cuba just don't have the resources to have a plentiful economy.

Cuba was a dictatorship under Batista - the majority lived in poverty.

Cuba was a dictatorship under Castro, but was supported by the Soviet Union - the standard of living improved for most Cubans, but the people of Russia paid for it.

Now Russia has pulled it's support, so Cuba's economy has gone down the drain again.

The only true hope for Cuba is to turn into a capitalist Democracy with an economy focused on tourism.,

The only alternative is for China to support them.

Cuba is communist, so what? The old cold war ideological conflict is one of the least crucial political dynamics at work here. Communism surely sucks but you are not prepared to accept why Cubans have lived by it all these years.

They didn't have a choice. They were forced to. And not by the United States.

They had one revolution they could have had another at any time. Authoritarianism alone does not make an authoritarian state. Cubans have a very strong nationalist streak. It's why any military invasion would fail miserably. They would rather have Cuban communism than anything they ever had as a colony because it's the closest thing they ever had to independence.

It's tough to have a revolution when your Communist dictator has disarmed everyone but the military, Comrade.

Ulloa says that Castro convinced the people that armament was not necessary. One week after seizing power, Fidel Castro said: “Weapons for what? to fight against whom? against the Revolutionary Government, which has the support of all the people?”. The audience present answered: “No!”

Officers, soldiers and revolutionary groups handed over their weapons. Later, many of them were executed or imprisoned.
