He didn't block the merger. A Reagan appointed judge did. It was blocked based on laws passed by both parties many years ago. Antitrust laws exist and it's the judge's job to interpret and enforce those laws. Easy peasy,

Spirit is full of it. They had almost $15 billion of debt on the books and had already filed BK once.
