Students do get paid if they have smarts. It's called GRANTS.First, free for whom? Are college professors going to work gratis, just to ensure that everyone gets a college degree? And how will universities be funded? Do you expect alumni to kick in to pay for facilities, rent, taxes, etc? "Free" for whom?
If you are all in for the European model, why not require 14-yr-olds decide whether to pursue academic or trade careers? Not everyone is made for academic degrees. Lots, and lots of kids, do far better with hands-on, trade-type careers.
Unfortunately, anything the government pays for is NOT free. The taxpayer foots the bill. Since I am a taxpayer, and my taxes are intended to foot the bill for "free" college, don't you think I should have some voice in just how that "free" education is parceled out?
Students should be PAID to go to college. If the U.S. is getting short on doctors, engineers or something, sweeten the pot a little to get 14 year olds to decide to take that path. Next, do you know WHY the U.S. is in such a shitstorm? Because the voice you do have IS shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!+
If you ever saw the documentary "Where to invade next," you would know that the American worker has to work harder and longer, and pay more in taxes, to receive far less that what people in many other developed countries receive. That isn't a fairy story. It is a fact! Now what do you have to say.
And what are "smarts." One time I heard about a couple of educated parents who decided to make their child a genius. Which they did. But one time when he was about 14 he was giving a lecture on 4th dimensional mathematics. Where from time to time he would laugh inappropriately. He ended up giving up on "smarts" and spent the rest of his life collecting subway tokens.
