She went to India to talk trade but the Indians just wanted to discuss immigration.

It would appear that the wider world has a similar view to our friends in the EU.

The bright new future is a million miles away.

She is expecting India to open up its market to Britain while simultaneously restricting Indian companies in UK from hiring skilled Indian workers. That is not going to happen.

I think that they see India as a big part of the UK future, growing market, close links, historical ties and so on.

Its all a big part of returning Britain to Victorian times. We gave them cricket ya know !!

Its further evidence of how deluded this government is.

They are indeed being silly if they think Indians have any respect for predatory British empire that ruined so much of India. However, past is past and we have to look to future. And, future will be bright for both India and UK if they co-operate with each other.

UK may have given India cricket but India has given UK polo, tea, Kohinoor and so on :)

UK cannot expect India to unilaterally open its market for UK goods and services while UK is restricting entry of skilled Indians into UK. That is completely absurd.

What do they say, people get the government they deserve

For those British who think The Raj was good for India, read this:

Shashi Tharoor’s latest, An Era of Darkness, is one breathless read. In it, he aggregates all the arguments required to establish that British colonial rule was an awful experience for Indians and he does so with a consummate debater’s skill. His book is, in fact, an expanded take on British exploitation of India that famously carried the day for Tharoor in an Oxford debate not too long ago.

According to Tharoor, there was nothing redeeming in British rule of our country. What India had to endure under them was outrageous humiliation on a humongous scale and sustained violence of a kind it had never experienced before. In short, British rule was, according to Tharoor, an era of darkness for India, throughout which it suffered several manmade famines, wars, racism, maladministration, deportation of its people to distant lands and economic exploitation on an unprecedented scale. An indignant Tharoor even demands a token restitution and public apology from the British for all the harm they had caused India. This is something, as his debate established, wildly popular in India.

...

The bald truth is — the Raj ruined us
