Over the last week or so, CNN has spent a lot of time portraying Doctors Fauci and Birx as heroes who were battling an unscientific, irresponsible Trump White House, and claiming that Trump and Republican governors are responsible for many of the COVID-19 deaths. The facts refute this picture and actually suggest the opposite.
Let's compare the case death rates of two states that imposed severe lockdowns with those of two states that did not. New York and Michigan imposed extremely restrictive lockdown measures. Florida opted for very moderate lockdown measures. South Dakota did not impose any lockdown measures. New York and Michigan have had far higher case death rates than Florida and South Dakota.
New York
2.68% case death rate
1.85 million cases
49,537 deaths
Florida
1.63% case death rate
2.04 million cases
33,177 deaths
Michigan
4.64% case death rate
723,000 cases
33,177 deaths
South Dakota
1.66% case death rate
117,000 cases
1,933 deaths
As The Great Barrington Declaration argues, with moderate, data-driven, targeted lockdown measures, instead of one-size-fits-all lockdown measures, we could have greatly reduced the death toll and also vastly reduced the damage to our economy. It was not a matter of shut down the economy or kill hundreds of thousands of people.
