You do know that Moses received the ten commandments in chapter 20 of Exodus. But, he received much more as time went on. He did not receive the stone tablets in which the scholars believe the ten commandments were written upon. He receives them in chapter 31. He comes down with them only to find Israel sinning a great sin in chapter 32. He sees this and breaks the stones throwing them down. Then, 3,000 die. According to the OT, 3,000 rebels were slain by the Levites who were on the Lord's side. In chapter 34, Moses receives new stones. It's our belief that the first set of stones had the higher law of Melchizedek, of Jesus Christ on it. But, Moses learned the people could not live by that law and the Lord gave him the lesser law of Aaron or the Levites. While the text doesn't mention anyone dying from the lightening or the mountain shaking violently, certainly that would have happened as well. I like the movie version than the Levites taking their swords and slaying them. The movie should have shown both.
