China starts ‘punishment’ military drills around Taiwan days after island swears in new leader

I'd ask where, but I kind of don't care.

Have you seen their carriers?

First, you have the Liaoning - It's an old Russian Carrier built in 1985, and it's crap.

Then you have the Shandong - It's actually a knockoff of the Liaoning, but has a lot of the same limitation.

The third carrier, the Fujian, is closer to a western carrier, but nowhere near as capable.
The 4th through 6th will come within 4 years and one every year and a half after those

A carrier fleet incapable of leaving its back yard

Quite. the problem is, China doesn't really NEED carriers. Carriers are good for projecting your influence long distances, which is why they were very popular with the US and the former British empire.

Any place China would potentially fight they either have a land border with or they are within easy striking distance of land-based air.

Back to the OP, it would be very difficult for China to invade Taiwan.

Just look at Ukraine, which has no Navy, but still chased Russia out of the Black Sea.
Low cost anti-ship missiles and Naval Drones raised havoc.
