The Spending Clause authorizes Congress to raise taxes and spend money “to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and the general Welfare of the United States.”

But you have to study the founding documents to understand what they meant by the 'general welfare.' It is always EVERYBODY'S welfare without respect to political party, economic status or other demographic.

The free market ensures that products and services will be affordable to the people really generally only applies to non-essential things. When prices get too high (sporting goods, musical instruments, jewelry, etc, people stop buying, yes.

But for essential goods (ex. housing rents, gas, food) sellers raise prices too high to where people can pay, but then they can't pay for much of anything else. May have to go out and get second job. Borrow, steal, etc.

For these essential things, regulation sometimes becomes needed, and govt is the only thing that can do it.

The law of supply and demand works effectively for essential needs as much as it does for anything else if the free market is allowed to work. There are no group of people in government or anywhere else smart enough, knowledgeable enough, or wise enough to micromanage that to good effect other than in a very narrow and limited way.

They were expensive when introduced but as capacity ramped up, distribution was built out and technology improved they got CHEAPER until that is, government got involved with regulation and picking winners and losers.
