I guess it's possible they could try some kind of coercion argument, but (a) that's very difficult to prove, (b) I suspect this will simply come down to his contract. If the contract has some kind of behavioral clause (we see this all the time in sports), then the employer can exercise that clause at their discretion. Coercion or not.
