I think the premise you have is no longer valid. The POTUS does not have the task of uniting the country, he is there to represent his team and lead the defeat of the other team. We the people would like to still think the POTUS unites America, but in reality no politicians wants to anymore. Politics is war. Probably always has been. The more you win, the richer you get.
