Is that an excuse for not trying? There is zero alarms for the Big Thompson River. But they did go in and modify the area so that it could minimize the amount of water that can be accumulated. The 1976 flash flood made the Texas Flood look like a piker. But the fixes (none are technical, meant that the same area could never have the impact it had before 1976.

When the Texas Governor was asked about it, he stated that he didn't have any recourses and pretty much, the community was not going to help. Funny that Mexico sent their own emergency people and has been fantastic. What they hell is wrong with you people that allows your own to perish in an emergency like that or even send in State Resouces to rescue people. HUNT, Texas (AP) — Texas inspectors signed off on Camp Mystic's emergency planning just two days before catastrophic flooding killed more than two dozen people at the all-girls Christian summer camp, most of them children.

The Department of State Health Services released records Tuesday showing the camp complied with a host of state regulations regarding "procedures to be implemented in case of a disaster." Among them: instructing campers what to do if they need to evacuate and assigning specific duties to each staff member and counselor.

Five years of inspection reports released to The Associated Press do not offer any details of those plans at Mystic, raising new questions about the camp's preparedness ahead of the torrential July 4 rainfall in flood-prone Texas Hill Country.

The National Weather Service had issued a flood watch for the area July 3 at 1:18 p.m. That danger prompted at least one of the roughly 18 camps along the Guadalupe River to move dozens of campers to higher ground.

The uncertainty about what happened at Mystic comes as local officials have repeatedly dodged questions about who was monitoring the weather and what measures were taken ahead of the flooding.

Here in Colorado, we had something similar happen in 1976.

1976 Big Thompson River flood​

On July 31, 1976, heavy rainfall caused the Big Thompson River in Colorado to crest, causing at least 144 deaths, more than 250 injuries, and at least 5 others to be missing. The crest was caused by a stalled thunderstorm complex that produced rainfall totals of 12–14 inches (300–360 mm) near Estes Park, Colorado, including 7.5 inches (190 mm) of rain which fell in one hour. After cresting at 30 feet (9.1 m), widespread damage and flooding occurred along the river, with the damage totaling almost $150 million (2016 USD). The flood is considered one of the deadliest floods in the state's history.

In 2013, something similar in weathered happened again in the BTR. The difference is, in 1976 there were over 2400 permanent residents for the River. When it happened again in 2013, the State had already put into place things that lessened the flow and no one was killed. In the 1976 one, 114 died and were never found.

Now, tell me again that there was nothing that could be done. The onus is on the State and Feds, not regular people.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Following this weekend’s devastating Texas floods that killed more than 100 people, and left at least two dozen still missing, outdoor warning sirens are now getting renewed attention.

“You want to try to get as many chances to get the public’s attention that trouble is on the way,” said State Sen. Paul Bettencourt, R-Houston.


On Monday, Bettencourt announced he’s drafting a bill — to be filed at the “earliest opportunity” — that would place civil defense sirens in flash-flood prone river valleys like the Upper Guadalupe River.

“This phone is too overloaded,” Bettencourt said, taking out his cell phone and holding it up. “You get bank alerts, and fraud alerts, and security alerts, and alerts of every kind. So, I was thinking we need to go back to old technology.”

2. With a positive spin, what about those who died already, no one was wanting to save them?

This is so sad. Here is a photo taken of all the girls and both counselors for Bubble Inn, the cabin that was right by the waters edge at Camp Mystic. EVERY PERSON IN THIS PHOTO IS CONFIRMED DEAD OR STILL MISSING. Every. Single. One.

I cannot look at this picture and not cry. Notice they are all in white. It's required that all the girls wear white on Sundays. It was taken Sunday, June 29th. Their first day of camp as their "cabin photo" of every girl in the cabin. They look so happy, so excited to be there.

Now they are all in heaven. God bless them and their families.
