Capitalism has a natural rate of unemployment for the capital benefit of Capitalists, not labor. A fifteen dollar an hour minimum wage benefits labor more; and, unemployment compensation is merely simpler and more cost effective; if a person needs more help than that, they can simply ask for at the unemployment counter and be directed to more general, welfare entitlements.
I guess what I am trying to say is, poverty sucks, and it SHOULD suck, but it should not be a dead end or a death sentence. We cannot eliminate ALL poverty or ALL homelessness but the record amounts of both are an indicator that we need to make constructive adjustments by offering more opportunities to those most in need, many of whom would gladly take it.
There are BUMS and then there are the WORKING poor and WORKING homeless.
These days, the bums are in the minority because most of the homeless in California, used to have homes, and their JOBS used to be enough to make ends meet.
We can help the working poor and help the working homeless, it can be done.
