WASHINGTON, D.C. — The algae from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool surged ahead of former Vice President Kamala Harris in polls for the Democratic Party's 2028 presidential nomination.

The news came over the weekend after many Democrats expressed approval of the green sludge covering much of the newly renovated reflecting pond in front of the national monument. Many said they thought the ooze adequately reflected their values and political objectives over other potential candidates like Harris.

"I like that stuff," Democratic voter Kelsey Waters said. "I'd vote for it in a heartbeat. It knows how to stand up to Republicans, and it seems to really be able to get the job done. Kamala was good, but I think the algae would do a better job leading the country."

The green goop surged ahead of all other candidates after Democrats saw how well it was able to undermine President Trump's efforts to clean up the reflecting pool.

"I'll vote for anyone or anything that opposes Donald Trump, be it Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom, or non-sentient green pond scum," Democrats Thomas Miller said. "To be honest, the pond scum has the best platform proposals right now of any of the other candidates."

At publishing time, the reflecting pool algae had also outperformed all members of Congress in the most recent approval polls.

If Harris had been elected, we would not be in a "war of choice." Inflation would not be spiraling out of control. Health care would be affordable. And the reflecting pool would not be a green mess of trump's doing. He lips are moving when he says it was vandalized, so he is lying...again.

Times Reports on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Controversy

The New York Times has published multiple reports challenging President Donald Trump’s claims about damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool following its costly renovation.

Vandalism claims debunked
In one June 2026 report, the Times cited government documents showing that National Park Service workers found only two cuts in the pool’s foam lining — about 171 feet long — but these were unrelated to the “American flag blue” paint coating that had floated to the surface. The cuts were not linked to the algae bloom, which was the worst in years. Park Police reports described them as “razor blade slashes” along a 20-foot section, and no evidence of vandalism was provided by the government. Around a dozen people had been arrested or cited, but the Times found no substantiated proof Yahoo.

Cost and scope of renovation
Earlier in May, the Times reported that the Trump administration’s no-bid contract with Atlantic Industrial Coatings had ballooned from an estimated $1.8 million to over $13 million, plus $1.7 million for a filtration system Mediaite. The project was meant to reseal expansion joints and apply blue-tinted coating, but the Times noted a “major underlying problem” — aging, leaky pipes under the parkland that bypass the filtration system. Without fixing these, algae could return and obscure the blue coating Mediaite.

Political fallout
The Times coverage came amid intense media scrutiny. Liberal networks like CNN and MS NOW devoted hours to the story, with CNN leading coverage time Yahoo. Trump had publicly praised the pool’s reopening but later claimed it had been “destroyed” by vandalism, prompting skepticism from journalists who questioned the scale of the alleged damage Raw Story.

Broader context
The Times also fact-checked Trump’s claim that Obama and Biden spent “hundreds of millions” on the pool, noting Obama’s 2010–2012 renovation cost $34 million and that Biden did not conduct major work AP News.

In sum, the Times reports frame the controversy as a mix of unverified vandalism allegations, hidden infrastructure issues, and a massive cost overrun, undermining Trump’s narrative of a successful, vandal-free renovation.
