An allegorical account of a historical event. Not worldwide but a worldwide disruption of weather due to an asteroid strike in the Indian ocean. An extremely unusual flood which is why all ancient cultures had similar accounts.

Neither does the Bible say that the universe revolves around the Earth, which is what the early Catholic church insisted upon at one time and would burn you at the stake for questioning.
