Bodacious Maneuvers!

Incredible.

High Flight

By John Gillespie Magee Jr.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds,—and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air ....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark nor ever eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Yep. I remember as a kid sitting downstairs in the dark early morning like 5 AM turning our TV set on watching the static waiting for the Indian test pattern to come on for the station to sign onto the air then they would play that poem before the start of programming.

Those were the good ol' days when stations signed off over night when they ran out of programming before staying on 24/7 all night long playing infomercials selling Shark carpet cleaners.

Here is a good documentary on the "Blue Angels." I pretty sure its free and you can find it on Amazon video.

I'm ex Air Force so I prefer the Thunderbirds, but this is a good watch.

Very, very nice. That is sure badass. Excellent camera work whoever was doing that. One thing that surprised me was seeing some damaged edges and bent corners on some of the pieces of the nosecone area, I guess maybe that is why they use the plane as a demonstrator. BTW, apparently it is now official that the SR-72 is official and really does exist as a NG spy plane/fighter capable of hitting Mach 6.

I saw that. If it is even half as kick-ass as the SR-71, it will be legendary.

Apparently it is all carbon airframe now as titanium isn't strong enough at this speed and the plane no longer uses/needs vertical stabilizers or rudders, and no longer uses an actual windshield, instead, the pilot flies/sees entirely by TV camera/computer screen leaving the jet with a somewhat "triangular/teardrop" shape to it.

Damn, I think I just had an orgasm. lol That is so... so.... What word am I looking for? lol

Essentially, the entire body of the jet is now a lift body acting as a wing and no longer has a fuselage in the conventional sense, and the wings now act more like horizontal stabilizers. And the engines, well, they are in there somewhere.

A design which is inherently unstable and only becomes stable at very high speed requiring active computer control making constant corrections with all the steering surfaces in real time to compensate for changing needs.

However it works, apparently it reaches speeds of 4500 mph. Fast enough to fly from NYC to LA in less than 40 minutes.
