This week, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her colleagues in the Progressive Caucus have reintroduced the Green New Deal in both the House and the Senate. Knowing of your interest in this issue, I am reaching out to inform you of my opposition to this outrageous proposal. Further, I took to the House Floor to urge my colleagues to join me in opposing this short-sighted measure. To view my speech, click here.

As you may know, the Green New Deal is a $93 trillion dollar government spending bill that costs more over the next ten years than the Federal Government has spent combined since 1979 and will cost an average American household nearly $700,000 through 2029. In the name of “climate justice,” this outrageous proposal crushes jobs, provides paychecks for people unwilling to work, abolishes airplanes, cows, and fossil fuels, and would require rebuilding or retrofitting every building in America. Moreover, it would ban affordable energy that heats our homes, eliminate 99 percent of cars, give “affordable housing” to every American (though the homes will not be heated), and ban meat! The bill would tax certain individuals and businesses that employ the majority of Americans at a 70 percent rate, which would destroy our economy. In other words, this proposal is an excuse for a full-blown government takeover of the private sector.

Rather than seeking energy independence through non-government innovation and the free-market, this radical plan continues the habit of looking to the government as opposed to the private sector to address our Nation's energy needs. I am a supporter of an “all of the above” energy strategy to meet the current global energy need. Wind, solar, nuclear, hydro, natural gas, renewable nanotechnologies, and fossil fuel usage should all be encouraged, and I am optimistic that consumers will have clean, safe, and reliable choices well into the future. The Green New Deal is a distraction to the discussion of envisioning a 21st Century America that is energy independent, leading in clean energy through private sector innovation, with a prosperous free-market economy offering opportunity for all.
