Rep. Julia Howard (R) is one of the longest-serving members of the NC General Assembly. She represents Davie and Rowan counties, a reasonably conservative district, but Howard isn’t known as a highly ideological warrior. She has long been a senior member of the House Finance Committee, including — until Tuesday — one of its senior chairs, responsible for running the committee and moving legislation.

House Speaker Tim Moore removed Howard from her position as senior finance committee chair on Tuesday after she spoke out publicly with ethical concerns over a bill that Republicans were promoting in her committee.

Specifically, House Bill 334 has to do with tax treatment of PPP loans. PPP loans are already untaxed under state law. HB334 would go further, allowing businesses to count PPP loan money spent as a deductible expense.

THE PROBLEM IS, SOME OF THE BILL’S BIGGEST SUPPORTERS IN THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY ALSO STAND TO PROFIT FROM IT PERSONALLY.

Guess Who Got PPP Loans in North Carolina?
Like we saw across the country, access to PPP loans turned out to be highly uneven. The application process was long and confusing for most. Big businesses scored large loans, while most small businesses failed. One analysis showed that 50% of PPP loan money in North Carolina went to just 4% of businesses.

Among those who scored were several prominent Republicans in the General Assembly:

  • House Speaker Tim Moore — $25,000 (he owns a law practice)
  • Rep. John Bradford — $400,000 (software company)
  • Sen. Chuck Edwards — $1,000,000 (banking and real estate)
None of this information was public knowledge until local journalists started checking.

This means that all of these lawmakers would personally profit from changing the tax treatment of PPP loans. Bradford, in particular, could save up to $20,000. It’s unclear just how much Senator Edwards would save, but it’s reasonable to assume it is far more.

Cockroach theory does explain it, doesn't it

Talk about a huge corporate socialist program. Wow, we give businesses millions of dollars tax free and that's not good enough? They want to be able to also write it off their taxes?

For some people "free" is never enough.

The rich writing laws for the rich and it favors the rich. Who would ever think of that.

We just passed a $1.9 trillion bill for coronavirus relief and 99% goes to the rich. They give the poor $1400 and that makes them content. We Americans are sure dumb.

Convict them but also take down Pelosi for her profiting on Fed legislation also. Oh wait, you don't give a rat's rear end about Prog corruption, sorry.

At this stage, it's only news if you find a Republican who isn't corrupt.

And as usual, we get a lot of bothsiderism from the Republicans. Except both sides aren't the same. While the Democrats aren't completely corruption-free, the Republicans are much, much worse, and pretending both sides are the same is an exercise in running interference for the criminals.

Republicans hate members who do not follow the party line.

Democrat Michigan State Rep charge with DWI, firearm violation, resisting arrest, threatens police budget and asks for police names and badge numbers for his call to Governor Whitmer...

If we're scraping the bottom of the barrel to score some political points...lets bring up some wood chips...

End the stupid lockdowns and the PPP program that is causing your complaints

here is another example closer to home for liberals:

what’s the corruption? sounds like folks in the general assembly are debating on an issue. Isn’t that what democratic society is suppose to do?

Libs don't know what reality is in the business world. Corporate welfare is not welfare, no matter how many time you claim it is.

A "corruption scandal"? Is this the best the left can come up with these days? Meanwhile nobody is talking about Andy Cuomo's problems. In a just world the NY Gov. would have been indicted for the deaths of about 10,000 nursing home residents not to mention the cover up and oh yeah the sexual abuse allegations.
