Bernie Sanders Praised Fidel Castro and Cuba in 1985

Can anyone here show what impact his statement made on...well, anything? Did Reagan hear him say this and say "Migod, we've been wrong all along! We must embrace Comrade Fidel as our brother!" and end the sanctions? No? Then surely there must have been some other impact. No?

And as long as Sander is never President, there never will be, thank God.

Well, he was talking about education and healthcare being provided by the country as being a good thing, and he's right.

Germany has national health care and they are moving towards making college free to anyone who wants it, up to a bachelor degree. Does that make Germany bad as well?

And besides...............the world has changed DRAMATICALLY since 1985. Maybe instead of clinging bitterly to outdated ideas, maybe we should all evolve a little bit and see things for what they really are rather than just political fuel to attack the opposition with.

The views I held in 1985 have seriously changed. In 1985 I was only 21.
I have heard it all now, lol - Germany a stable pillar for all the world to look too.... Ha. Ha. Ha.

Once they collapse all the Eurozone does, just a matter of time.
They deserve all things bad that happen to them.

This is great! Last week's Righty Hysteria boosted Hillary in the polls and increased her campaign contributions. Maybe you all can do the same for Bernie! Keep up the good work!

It shouldn't be a surprise. Bernie is an unrepentant socialist. It doesn't matter of Castro was a brutal dictator who executed homosexuals and other minorities, politics and anti-Americanism is what counts to the left.

So...........if some country that we don't agree with comes up with some really good programs that work, should we ignore their ideas because they don't think like we do politically?

Sorry............but a good idea is a good idea, no matter who comes up with it.

I personally think that universal healthcare and a free college degree for whoever wants it is a good thing.

I mean, we give it to the military in the form of sickcall (that can be visited at ANY time for any reason, and it doesn't cost the member anything), and we give free college in the form of the GI bill and various other programs like PACE (Programmed Afloat College Education) and others. If you have the drive and want it bad enough, you can get a full degree in 6 to 8 years while in the military.

Holy smokes, this is who he is basing his champagne on. see any difference from his platform he's running on? There is no difference on what Hillary is running on. that makes up the whole so called, Democrat, which should be the Socialist party of the United States. this needs to be shown as a Republican ad.

In 1985, while he was the mayor of Burlington, VT, Bernie Sanders gave an interview to the local cable access network during which he praised Fidel Castro for educating his people and giving them healthcare.

CNS News reported:

Sanders in 1985: Castro ‘Educated Their Kids, Gave Their Kids Health Care, Totally Transformed Society’

During the interview, Sanders discussed his recent trip to Nicaragua, marking the sixth anniversary of the Sandinista revolution, and drew parallels between Castro’s regime and the Nicaraguan Sandinista regime of Daniel Ortega.

“In 1961, [America] invaded Cuba, and everybody was totally convinced that Castro was the worst guy in the world,” said Sanders.

“All the Cuban people were going to rise up in rebellion against Fidel Castro. They forgot that he educated their kids, gave their kids health care, totally transformed society,” he said.

“You know, not to say Fidel Castro and Cuba are perfect – they are certainly not – but just because Ronald Reagan dislikes these people does not mean to say the people in these nations feel the same,” continued Sanders.

Sanders in 1985: Castro ‘Educated Their Kids, Gave Their Kids Health Care, Totally Transformed Society’

and I'll be if that isn't what his campaign/platform is he's running on. Free health care, free education, free everything we just pluck the money from magic money trees.

The Magic Money Tree is what you live on.

RWNJs always say its bad EXCEPT when they are the recipient.

Please educate yourselves as to what Democratic Socialism means.

Meanwhile, what Biker Sailor said is true - it makes sense to learn from the successes of other countries instead of blindly insisting on being wrong.

How do you know this topic wasn't started by a Hillary operative?

After all, she started the birther movement and told Senator Thompson that Nixon's office had a taping system and told Senator Walsh about Teapot Dome.
