Has anybody ever had any experience with them? I hike a lot, but thankfully I've never run into any of them. I heard mixed responses on what you're supposed to do if you ever run into a bear. One response is you're supposed to play dead. The other is you're supposed to raise your arms above your head to make yourself look bigger and make a lot of noise. So which is it? Or does either work?

When I was a kid, my dad took us to Yellowstone. On the way in, and out too I guess, there were black bears all along the highway.

People would stop and take pictures and no doubt, feed the bears. Which is why they gathered there.

My dipshit dad got out of the car with his 8mm SuperMax camera and walked over to film a bear up in the tree. The bears around him and us thought that was so amusing they started sauntering over to where he was. Well, My dad, being My Dad, casually walked back to the car, climbed in and said, "ROLL UP THE WINDOWS!!!!!"

lol

Oh, and I ran across a dead bear along the highway at my in-laws' house. Looked like he had been hit by a car.

I visited Sequoia Nat'l Park many years ago. They have many bears there and we were told to collect rocks and keep them on our picnic tables in readiness for bears in the campground. We were advised to make noise, bang pans, yell bear and throw rocks at them. More recently, I've seen advice to make yourself look bigger and carry bear spray and when hiking, don't be quiet so that you don't startle an unsuspecting bear.

I am not surprised that conflicting advice was put out there. Isn't that pretty much how it is when asking for advice about anything? I've heard conflicting advice about what you are to do when you witness another person having a seizure. Do you stick a spoon into their mouth or not?

God bless you always!!!

I've been places where we could have run into a black bear and were unarmed, it was after dark, and we were nearly lost. Not a good place to be in. Play dead? Yeah, if that is all you got, go for it. You are not out-fighting a bear, out-climbing a bear or out-running a bear.

Bear spray? Good luck with that. If a bear wants you, he will have you, your only real hope is to have a .45 or a medium-bore rifle.

Even a knife--- I have a 15" Bowie--- good for nothing, even if you get lucky and fatally stab him, he will maul you to death likely before he bleeds out.

Depends on how hungry they are.

I'm pretty sure that the bear just wasn't hungry.

Wow, two bears at one time, that's pretty scary. Then again, like the first video that you posted that I was also thinking about, if you don't bother them I've heard that a bear is pretty docile and usually will just mind his or her own business. Unless it's a mama bear with her cubs.

In some documentary I watched a man went out on a hike and nearly died because he encountered a mama and her (three I think) cubs. It's an extremely dangerous situation to be in. Angry mothers when it comes to their kids aren't just known as Mama bears for no reason.

In Ohio we have black bears. When I was a kid one was wandering around the neighborhood. I never saw it though.

That's funny, for the Ohio guidelines you AREN'T supposed to climb trees and yeah I don't know where I heard about the playing dead thing. It doesn't seem to be the right approach.

I don't know as I haven't heard about that before but God bless you as well!! ♥️

Yeah, you're the one who actually inspired this topic from my virtual camping thread. It also surprised me to find out that Bear Spray doesn't work.

Out on the mountain, we have a mama bear and her cubs in the yard nearly every day. Her cave is on the other side of the driveway. The only thing she's afraid of are the dogs.

Are you afraid to go out in your yard if you don't have your dogs with you?

Throw them a sandwich and then run.

We have bears in this area as well as cougars. I've seen many more cougars--only one bear and he didn't want to have anything to do with us. I never felt threatened. Now the cougars are another story--the neighbors with sheep have lost some every year.

Bear Spray-- Ha. All the good bear spray is for is maybe dissuading a bear from attacking you who was only curious and not really all that interested in you anyway. Otherwise, it'll probably just piss him off.

You really don't want to run into a brown bear.

Oh yeah: One other bear defense if you forgot to bring your magnum rifle: bring a friend along with you who doesn't run as fast as you.

Yep, a cougar is a much more immediate threat than most black bear. Most bear steer clear of people unless you are feeding them, whereas the cougar sees you as potential food. A cougar will try to kill and eat you, bears mostly attack because they feel threatened or because they have cubs.

Most bear problems come from running into or surprising the bear doing his business, whereas you will never see the cougar stalking you until it is too late.

I've heard that Ohio has bobcats believe it or not, but only in certain areas of it.

Who would ever be stupid enough to feed the bears though?
