Bears

Oops sorry about that my bad. 🫣

We have a wildlife webcam at our house and we usually catch the deer, raccoons, skunks, and opossums, but one night a coyote was in our driveway. 😮

Umm yeah, I can definitely see why. 😂

Isn't that Gentle Ben?
no .. Gentle Ben was played by a black bear named Bruno ..

I knew that bears were simply misjudged animals. They just want to chill out and play pool.

Bobcats and lynx are here too. I've seen a lynx on my driveway about 40 yards from my front door and one of the neighbors trapped a bobcat. LOL, I wish they'd start feeding on the turkeys.

I love to eat turkey as much as the next person but what's wrong with having them at your place?

They're noisy, they tear up your yard, they leave calling cards and at the spring and fall hatch they're everywhere. They're in the roads and you can't go five miles without having to avoid a stinkin' turkey. LOL They're interesting to watch when they're strutting.

Man! Suddenly I'm missing Thanksgiving.

(We have turkeys too for the record and I think that they're neat that's why I asked.)

Now, what I want to know is what the heck is this? 😳

I'm lucky that Ohio only has black bears in that case. Although any mama (or possibly even papa) bear probably would be dangerous with cubs.

Oh yeah, I would expect that you'd have to go well north of Ohio to reasonably run into any likely population of brown bears. Brown bears are not at all acclimated to human population, bears themselves being one of the more onerous remnants left over from the Early Neogene.

I am not surprised that conflicting advice was put out there. Isn't that pretty much how it is when asking for advice about anything? I've heard conflicting advice about what you are to do when you witness another person having a seizure. Do you stick a spoon into their mouth or not?

God bless you always!!!

Holly (a girl who no bear experience)
No.

Now you give them Narcan.

Oh and btw toobfreak, now I know what you meant about always bring a friend with you on a hike. Anytime, but especially in a place where bears live. I originally thought that you were talking about sacrificing your friend for your own life (or a family member) but if you bring somebody with you they could possibly help you escape.

That surprises me about the black bear as I thought that it was supposed to be docile and this video claims that Bear Spray works. I see that it also makes a point of saying don't climb trees around black bears though. Also, I guess that playing dead around them doesn't work around them either though.

Has anybody ever had any experience with them? I hike a lot, but thankfully I've never run into any of them. I heard mixed responses on what you're supposed to do if you ever run into a bear. One response is you're supposed to play dead. The other is you're supposed to raise your arms above your head to make yourself look bigger and make a lot of noise. So which is it? Or does either work?
Depends on what kind of bear it is.
Black bear, get aggressive.
Grizzly, play dead.
Polar bear, call your mom real quick.

Yes, far north of Ohio - mostly up in Canada.

Also, "black bears" are actually brown - at least they are in Colorado. Actual "brown bears" are grizzlies (a grizzly is a type of brown bear). I know because I was telling people I saw a brown bear - and they were like - "No, you didn't. You so a black bear that was brown." :)
