Bill Gates is buying up large amounts of farmland. Many Republicans are concerned about the Chinese buying up American farmland, but their ownership is relatively low compared to Bill Gates. Why is he buying all that farmland?
Obscene levels of inequality and white supremacy? True enough that Gates is an extremely wealthy white man who owns more farmland in America than any human in history.
My question is what is Gates up to?
Does he anticipate that we will return to an agricultural society, having lost most of our manufacturing base, and the information age being no longer a U.S. phenomena? Does he want to force on us his view that we produce too much meat, and we're killing the planet? Will he simply take that land out of production so that we can pay as much for our food as non-white people do? Or maybe go back to eating the food of the poor, being happy with a bag of rice, and a bag of manioc flour with which to spend hours preparing meals?
That is the food of the poor outside the U.S. of course. Our "poor" regularly hold up grocery store lines separating their EBT-purchases card food, from their AFDC-purchases snacks, alcohol, and cigarettes. But maybe Gates thinks that even they should not have so many ribs, pork chops, and tamales available.
I'd love to read about a less nefarious reason Gates could have for this.
Anyone?
PS: Trivia time - Anthony Michael Hall, who played Bill Gates in a movie about the beginning of Microsoft and of Apple, played a character nicknamed "Farmer Ted" in one of his earlier movies. Five points for the first one who names that movie.
Bill Gates is the biggest private owner of farmland in the United States. Why? | Nick Estes
Gates has been buying land like it’s going out of style. He now owns more farmland than my entire Native American nation
