As Expected, Trump's Incompetence Showing Bg Time

I think it's safe to say that, going forward, our former allies and trading partners will only deal with us -- on trade, finance, security, intelligence, or anything else -- when they HAVE to, and not because they WANT to.

I don't know how much that will matter, but we're sure going to find out.
I understand that Trump is breaking a treaty with Canada and Mexico that he himself negotiated.
It marks out the US as an unstable friend.
They will always have some clout because of its size and wealth. But countries that rely on them wiill find other markets for their goods and alternative suppliers. Just like China did with the soya beans last time.

WOW! The WSJ has a fucked up attitude when it comes to Americans dying.

Nuffin can be done...don't bother trying. (that is essentially what they are saying).

Very disappointing WSJ! VERY disappointing!

The Journal piece was quite accurate on that point.

Drugs will flow into the US from anywhere as long as there is a healthy and lucrative market for them.

Mexico and Canada are NOT the major import highways for drugs.

Most fentanyl comes into the US on container ships.

The drug thing is a feeble Trump excuse for breaking his own treaty.

Yet another Sterling example that Donald Trump can’t be trusted, won’t keep his word, and won’t stand behind his own commitments.

Of course, any US banker (othercthan the ones renting him at the moment) could have told you that thirty years ago.

And because Trump is feckless, disloyal and untrustworthy. So is the country he represents.

Trump is simply not held responsible here for anything he has said or done or agreed to in the past. I don't know why or how that is, but that's it. And other countries have to understand that and deal with it accordingly. And this will only get worse as he accumulates more power and control.

And yes, the world has always valued our stability, so it will have to move on from that, as well. American stability is now American chaos. I can't quite tell how well other countries have come to terms with this, but they'd better just get started. We have our hands full in dealing with it as it is.

We have had a safe border with Canada for over 200 years and because Trump told you a lie that it was dangerous you cult members fell into line like the sheeple you really are. That is the very definition of cult.
Illegal crossings from Canada hit record levels in 2024

Thank xiden for that

So says the Wall Street Journal

“President Trump will fire his first tariff salvo on Saturday against those notorious American adversaries . . . Mexico and Canada. They’ll get hit with a 25% border tax, while China, a real adversary, will endure 10%. This reminds us of the old Bernard Lewis joke that it’s risky to be America’s enemy but it can be fatal to be its friend.

Leaving China aside, Mr. Trump’s justification for this economic assault on the neighbors makes no sense. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt says they’ve “enabled illegal drugs to pour into America.” But drugs have flowed into the U.S. for decades, and will continue to do so as long as Americans keep using them. Neither country can stop it…

Mr. Trump sometimes sounds as if the U.S. shouldn’t import anything at all, that America can be a perfectly closed economy making everything at home. This is called autarky, and it isn’t the world we live in, or one that we should want to live in, as Mr. Trump may soon find out…

None of this is supposed to happen under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement that Mr. Trump negotiated and signed in his first term. The U.S. willingness to ignore its treaty obligations, even with friends, won’t make other countries eager to do deals..”

When you elect a dolt as President, expect him to make stupid decisions. This trade War with Canada and Mexico is just idiotic considering that it was Trump himself that renegotiated a new trade agreement with them only a few years ago.

Like everyone who has done business with Trump will attest: his word is garbage.

OUCH! The Mexican President fired back hard. Good for her. --

In a post on X, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said, without offering details, that Mexico would retaliate.

“We categorically reject the calumny from the White House, that the Mexican government has alliances with criminal organizations,” she said. “If such an alliance exists anywhere, it’s with the gun manufacturers of the United States, which sell high-powered weapons to these criminal groups.”

Not really. The U.S. sells guns to Mexican criminal organizations. --

Wall Street Journal? LOL

If tariffs are bad idea, what are other countries using them against us?
NONE that you have trade deals with. Trump went bankrupt 7 times. Failure to live up to the contracts he signs, has been standard operating procedure for Trump throughout his business career.

Trump revelled in bullying his subtrades, and then using his power and his money to fight any lawsuits, bankrupting smaller subtrades. Lawfare. Over 4000 business law suits. Trump invented it and perfected it. Now he accuses the Feds to doing it him, all while he conducts his usual appeals, denials, and delays. It worked.

Trump revelled in destroying people. There were suicides. Everyone Trump has every invited to "get rich" with him, has gone broke. Trump University, Trump's Casino companies, Trump hotels and resorts in Puerto Rico, Panama, Toronto, among others.

Notice that all of the jurisdictions where Trump has gone bankrupt, are being attacked.

Look in the mirror for the commie, Red. You Red MAGA will destroy this nation with your idiocy. Just like you to attack the WSJ because you are at heart anti-capitalist. It is why you in particular spout anti-Ukraine Russian propaganda and seem perfectly happy to see a resurgent USSR.
Real Americans don't listen to traitors ^^^

The UK should shut it or they will get a dose of the same medicine.

"The Premier of Canadian province of British Columbia, David Eby, called on residents to stop buying liquor from U.S. “red” states and said it was removing American alcohol brands from government store shelves as a response to the tariffs" ~ Associated Press

Meanwhile BC residents are incensed at the request ...
Including an elderly woman who correctly indicating the State of Mississippi has a single vineyard
larger than the entire wine producing region of British Columbia.

Shut up Canada, suck a tariff you scammers.
We are the tax payers that have to PAY for it....then when tax cuts come around people like you will claim we don't pay taxes enough to get an income tax rate cut....how do we, the middle class consumers who are the masses of people paying the tariffs/taxes to the government in inflationary tariff prices, ever going to get a tax cut?

Tariffs are simply a govt trick to collect higher taxes from the middle class without acknowledging that we are being heavily taxed.

Your response is knee jerk.

First, the tariffs against Mexico and Canada make no sense. As Trump himself re-negotiated a trade deal with them and they are among our largest trading partners.

Second, the trade war is going to cause rampant inflation, and,

Third, as the WSJ points out, Trump’s rational for the tariffs against Mexico and Canada are based on falsehoods.

By the time Trump leaves office the economy will be in the shitter just like after his first term…only this time it will be much worse.
