If something is fired at what someone thinks is a drone and it hits a private or commercial aircraft, this could be the excuse the government is looking for to impose martial law. Considering that of the thousands of pictures taken, only about a hundred can't be easily identified as manned aircraft with just cursory inspection. Since so many people who normally never look at the sky are now searching for drones, I suspect lots of conventional aircraft are being mistaken for drones.

I live in NJ and have seen the drones over the last three nights over a nearby reservoir
I also live near an airport and see planes passing by with their lights on. The planes pass by in a few minutes while the drones remain in the same spot for up to an hour with their lights blinking

Not sure why a nefarious drone would have FAA required safety lights. That would be like a thief honking his horn when he pulled into your driveway to let you know he was there. They don't need the lights to navigate, and they could easily remove the light bulbs before they went on a top-secret spy mission.

If I were to go to conspiracy land, I'd suspect something less extreme. The feds have been pushing for more regulation on private drones for years, and the hubbub around this might be used as an excuse for major pushes in that direction.

Yep. of the thousands of pictures sent in only about 100 weren't easily identified as regular aircraft by people who knew what they were talking about. With all the hair on fire publicity, every light in the sky is an enemy drone to someone who wants to see one. Did you ever hear the story about when Orson Wells broadcast The war of the Worlds on radio? People were seeing space monsters everywhere.

Sounds like a batshit crazy conspiracy theory, but if it keeps Cletus from shooting at everything he sees flying overhead, I'm all for it.
