The two parties have always used their primary process to arrive at a one candidate from a field of many.
In the past, most voters were either Republican or Democrat, so the final two candidates reflected a majority of the electorial, for the most part. Now, the majority of voters fall into the Indepenent or "other" category. Only around 26% identify as Rep., around 30% identify as Dem., and around 43% as Independent. This would suggest the primaries no longer reflect the perspectives of the majority of American voters.
Elections should be open to all registered voters at all times to choose who their candidates should be, not just in the general election. Anyone who wants to run for elected office should be able to and everyone should have access to vote for whomever is running. Currently, Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina hold way too much power in their ability to quickly eliminate numerous candidates from the race, even though the people of those states do not necessarily reflect the same perspectives of millions of Americans in other states around the country.
There are numerous ways the process could be changed, we just have to find the best one that allows the largest number of voters to all have their vote represented at the same time, without being swayed by prior states votes and the media bias and agendas trying to push the public one way or the other.
