What does "belong to a religion" mean?

Even when I was a religious person, I would never have used that wording.

Seems creepy.

Malachi 3: 7 ¶ Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return? 8 ¶ Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. 9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. 10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

It's not a tradition and never was. It was a commandment from the beginning. Abraham said he paid his tithing (one-tenth of his increase) to Melchizedek, the High Priest. What your alms are are "offerings." Money that can be used to help the poor and the needy specifically. Tithing is one-tenth of your income.

Tithing is great if you can afford it, and if it goes to the true church.

You think the widow Mite could afford it? Tithing is actually about faith in Christ. Do you have faith in Christ or not? If not, then keep on robbing him.

Tithes go to support the Levites, the priests of Judaism. I'm not Jewish.
