Tithing was the tradition in Biblical times when the congregation gave 1/10 of their profits, either in cash or in kind. Alms are cash, in whatever amount the donors deem appropriate.

I am Messianic Jewish but I attend any church that my wife really likes. She does a fantastic job of choosing churches where spiritual gifts are at work.
