It could have been prevented, it was the duty of the Commander in Chief /Obama to prevent it, the Ambassador asked for more security only hours before the attack!

I think the whole thing was poor planning in what should have been anticipated especially on 9/11.

Nevertheless, sending in air support "strafing the streets of Benghazi" without a clear intelligence picture on the ground could have led to Americans or innocent bystanders being mistakenly hit. Officials also feared an ambush by the attackers.
