I am mostly indifferent to it. The past is the past. Today is what it is. American history is actually kind of boring. Not as boring as say Australia's, but certainly not as intriguing as Europe's.

So you disagree with Santayana who said 'those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.'?

I believe the term is learn 'from' history. When one judge's history, one has to judge by the knowledge and standards existing at that time in history.

Obviously, the U.S.A. will historically have a big black eye over its history of slavery and institutionalized racial discrimination for many years after, but on the other hand, we pioneered an economic system which paved the way for technological innovations that resulted in most of the western world and some of the far east having the best standard of living in human history. Middle class people today have more luxuries at their disposal than the Vanderbilts and the Rockefellers did 100 years ago
