American workers are demanding almost $80,000 a year to take a new job

Ah...Life in the 90s.

But when factories closed and layoffs ensued in the 2000s many people were forced into the fast food industry.

But you missed the point.

The paradigm applies to all jobs in all industries.

It applies to the car you buy, the house, the TV, the PROGRAMMER YOU HIRE.

You get what you pay for.

And people who say that rising wages, brought on by demand for workers ignore the simple fact that the employer sets both the wages and the prices. By saying supply and demand works for employers but not for employees those people are being highly hypocritical.
A worker, regardless if they are a burger flipper at burger king, have the opportunity to expand those skills by aligning to a new employer. No one forces a burger flipper to work at burger king.

Educational opportunities are easily obtainable to elevate resources into new career choices .. anyone that settles for being a burger flipper and the status quo to complain they need $15/hr isn't focused on advancing their opportunities.

There is nothing wrong at a young person living in their parents basement, working full time, saving. Not buying a house, waiting until late 30s or early forties to get married. That's wise . It hurts nobody and helps the nation.

Some of those "burger flippers" have skills. Unfortunately the skills they have are no longer in demand.

But, again, you miss the point.

The thread OP complains about people demanding more money to accept jobs.
Capitalism at work.
When the labor supply is thin, wage demands go up.
When the labor supply is fat, wage offers go down.

You seem to think the ball should only be owned by the business but tell me, without workers how do businesses make money?

Without labor there is no business.
Something this country, because of a constant GOP war on regular working Americans, has forgotten.
What you don't understand, apparently, is that business should be a partnership between management and labor, not a war.

But here's the good thing. Thanks to the GOP hatred of all things foreign we have a labor shortage and that labor shortage is causing workers to understand that the business needs them more than they need the business.

The days of the robber baron (Musk) are ending.

Keep it up, pretty soon the average rent will exceed $3000.00 a month.

  • The amount of money most workers want now to accept a job reached a record high this year.
  • Employers have been trying to keep pace with the wage demands, pushing the average full-time offer up to $69,475, a 14% surge in the past year.
  • The numbers are significant in that wages increasingly have been recognized as a driving force in inflation.

If they keep it up, workers will be able to afford to put food on the table and a roof over their family’s heads without getting food stamps, or Section 8.

Basic economic theory with no substance on "the GOP War" against workers and "the Gop hatred of all things foreign" .. Lol .. it's the GOP's fault.. got it.

You're forgetting the basic premise of marketability, qualifications and skillsets. You're a piss poor business person if you're paying an unqualified or junior resource the salary of a well qualified, skilled resource (just like Democrats do with diversity hires) no matter the labor shortage. You also don't pay a resource an ungodly amount for a role that has a large pool of resources available like a burger flipper / entry level.

but it's all the GOPs fault.

In the past the argument against unions was that people should be able to negotiate their employment terms on their own. Now it seems that the argument is that people shouldn't be able to negotiate their employment terms at all.

Effort is tied directly to wages. Lower paying jobs mean an employer does not want your best effort. More pay means they expect more effort. Capitalism 101.

For a while, until inflation caused by those higher wages eats up their new buying power.
It's a story of the dog chasing it's tail.

Do you see any indication that the "GOP hatred of all things foreign" is preventing Biden's border flood from occurring? We are seeing record #'s flooding in, despite any attempts by the GOP to curb it or stop it. Get a clue!

It's a story of the dog chasing it's tail.

But the numbers are already proving that isn’t happening. The rate of inflation is going down, even if the rate of wages are going up.

The biggest driver of wage increases in the United States, is the labour shortage. When Trump closed your borders to new immigration, There there were 5 million job openings in the United States. There are now 11 million job openings in the United States, and no one to fill them. Employers are having to compete for workers by offering them ever more money and benefits. Finally!

In Ontario, where I live, the minimum wage was raised to $15 in 2015 amid howls of fear from the right that it’s “inflationary”, but that never happened. Instead wage rose and poverty decreased.

In Canada, we gave the tax breaks to working Canadians and increase their wages so that in Canada, workers and the middle class get a much larger share of the economic pie than the wealthy and corporations. In the USA 80% of the wealth goes to the top 10%. In Canada, it’s 40%. We have no Canadian billionaires, but our poverty rate is less than 5%.

Our infrastructure isn’t crumbling, our education system isn’t being politicized and destroyed, and our governments don’t spend all of their time and our running phony corruption investigations of the other party for political gain bat nour expense. We’d throw them out of office if they even tried it

Americans really need to start growing a spine and insisting upon honesty from both their politicians and their media. Republicans need to stop taking revenge on Democrats for exposing the corruption in the Republican Party. 40 years of these phoney investigations that haven’t produced a single charge, or even a shred of evidence, and still you give these people money and power to cheat you.

The GOP war on labor has been going on for decades

Ever heard of Buc ee's?

The average Buc-ee's salary ranges from approximately $34,101 per year for a Deli Clerk to $69,703 per year for a General Manager.

Seems they're pay scales isn't stopping their expansion.

How is it that paying their employees better is causing growth?
Maybe better paid employees are better employees?
More productive?
More geared toward customer service.

Pay better, get better employees, better employees help the business grow.
Pay less, get what you pay for, and, like last night, at Arby's, unhappy customers.

I don't know what business you run but based on your ignorance you won't be running it long.

Except that you’re not seeing “record #’s flooding in”. The numbers are down. Way down. Since the Biden administration ended Title 42, Illegal border crossings have dropped by 89%.

Trump’s policy of closing the border drove illegal crossings up. You can’t claim refugee status unless you’re standing on US soil. Refugees had to cross the border illegally in order to claim refugee status.

When Trump took office in 2017 border crossings were at the lowest level in 50 years. How could he justify building his stupid wall if the Democrats’ policy of prosecuting employers was working. People didn’t jump the border if there were no jobs waiting for them. And employers wouldn’t hire them with the IRS performing audit on their employees documentation.

Trump forced refugee claimants to cross illegally when he first metered the numbers coming in and then closed the border under Title 42. He also ceased all prosecution of employers, raiding their plants and locking up the hundreds of illegals working there, but no charges whatsoever on the employers.

By 2019, Trump had his number illegal border crossing numbers up so high that he declared a national emergency at the southern border in order to build his stupid wall.

Biden started prosecuting employers, rebuilt the refugee support system at the southern border that Trump had dismantled, and set up an immigrant and refugee program online to help those seeking to enter the country, to do so, in an orderly, legal manner. 89% reduction in illegal border crossing.

Imagine that!!!

Do try to stay on topic.
I realize you having your ass handed to you here but try to use your embarrassment as a learning experience.

Obviously you don't understand the service model that Bucees is using .. Bucees' pays higher entry level wages because of the culture they have created and embraced: focused on investing in their employees, providing top-notch service to its customers and customer experiences. This includes employee retention, quality of service, clean environments and opportunities for advancement -- something an Arby's, or most other fast food restaurants and entry-level opportunities, do not. You're comparing apples to oranges. What else you got Mr. Businessman?

Well since no "border flood" is occurring at all, and you're not seeing anything near record numbers "flooding in", there's no point in respond to your post, other than to say, that the American Chamber is Commerce is BEGGING the government to increase levels of immigration to deal with the labour shortages.

So because the flood of the third-world slowed down while Trump was in office, that's why we have a labor shortage now?

The shortage began when Americans got a taste of what it's like to sit on their fat asses at home and collect government money during Covid.
Many, decided they didn't want to go back to work, so millions are on some form of government assistance. Take away those handouts, and you'll suddenly see that labor shortage problem go away.
