I am being very honest here.

As I've said before living in the midwest in the 50s I had a cousin that had a black baby.
I had a black business partner in the south in the 70s and have had several black bosses.. so I really don't think I'm a racist... but
when I saw this headline:...
"North Miami Beach Man Fatally Shot After Fight Over Utensils Breaks Out at Baptism Party"
my first observation was I wonder if this took place at a black Baptism party"?

Was I racist or a realist?

Over the years, I've seen various stories of fights breaking out at parties. The race changes with the stories. No one has a monopoly on misbehavior.

Who cares? Did they have insurance?

But this is another fine example of why I am so glad that every swinging dick that wants one can get a gun.

It's wonderful. Isn't it.

Does that make me a communist, socialist, hater of the 2nd? Or what?

But if you have to ask if you are a "racist", you probably are. Maybe not though. Check with one of your black friends.

Racist.

The higher instance of violence per capita amongst African Americans is due to gang violence.

Outside of gangs, like at the birthday party you describe, if you simply attribute those behaviors to being black itself? Yea, you're probably racist.

I am not sure that assuming the obvious makes one a racist. In other words when we hear of the knock out game I usually think of black on white crime because that is usually what it is. So I guess breaking down to black an white makes one a racist? I assume it does if the person doing so is white.

Here is an example of how Racism has gotten lost in the argument.

Say you have two people equally qualified for a job. One is black and one is white, who do you hire?

I wait your answer.

I didn't know their color as I would be hiring them over the phone.

I'm still trying to figure out how having a cousin who had a black baby in the 50s is a credential that establishes one as not being a racist.

"Hey, I'm no racist! My cousin had a black baby 60 years ago!"

BWA-HA-HA-HA!

Freewill came the closest, but I think most here missed Healthmyths point with the question in the OP.

How I interpreted it is that he (she?) is questioning whether his wondering if the participants in that story were black makes him/her a racist. i.e. would a non racist even think about race when reading that story?

And my answer is no. Not necessarily. If Healthmyths assumes somebody behaving like that must be black because that is the way blacks behave, then yes, that would be racist. But if he was simply reacting to the reality that most incidents like that are among black people in that area, that would be a realistic opinion that would not necessarily be racist. That wouldn't be any different than wondering if the folks were Texans or Italians or from Hoboken.

It is like the black clergyman who once reported that he was walking down a dark street in a tough neighborhood one night when he saw that he would meet two individuals coming from the other direction. And as the gap narrowed, he was relieved to see that the two individuals were white. Based on experience, he had less to fear from white people in that neighborhood than he did black ones. Racist? Not at all. Just simply reality.

However, if any of the folks were assuming that bad behavior is BECAUSE the people are BLACK or WHITE or any other color, rather than just acknowledging the reality that most of the bad behavior happens among people who happen to be black or white or whatever, then we're wandering into racist territory.

Sounds more like you are prejudiced.

Thats not what the media portrays when they want to frighten white people.

If that were the agenda, the media could have run wild with this story, which only got local coverage- Murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

These subhumans perpetrated acts of savagery and dehumanization that would have made Charlie Manson blush. Should have been a national story. Hell international, with the front page of the NYT printing editorials on the problem with minority crime in America.

No, that didn't happen.

You evidently dont know how it works. They use the physiological approach. They show stupidity attributed to Black people, violence, celebrity outrageous actions, then top it off with a murder. Otherwise you would get saturated.

Both?

Just kidding!

I think that you jumped to a conclusion that was either correct or incorrect (I didn't look at the link), I don't think it's necessarily "racist". For instance, if I heard a news story about a guy being arrested for fornicating with his goat, would it make me a "racist" or a "realist", if I immediately jumped to the conclusion that it was a White guy who perpetrated that act?

Thanks for bringing the thread back on topic. And again, if we don't assume that it is because people are white that they 'fornicate with a goat' or whatever, or that it is because people are black that they are whatever, it's perfectly non racist to hold certain stereotpical images in our minds that are based on our personal experience.

For instance when I hear 'olympic swimmer' or 'golfer' I generally image a white person because there are so few black people participating in those sports. If I hear 'football' or 'basketball' player I generally image a black person. If I hear 'soccer' I generally image more Mediterranean or South American hued folks. If I hear the term 'flash mob' I generally image white people. If I hear the term 'gospel choir' I generally image black people Those are not negatives, they are just what I most commonly associate with this or that.

No, it is called conditioning. Expecting something because it is usually that way. There is nothing derogatory or critical or prejudicial in the examples I gave. It is just an illustration of what my experience has been. Do you think there is something wrong with any of the 'for instances' that I suggested? Does the fact that my initial association with something automatically assume that it MUST be that way? Or SHOULD be that way? Is the fact that I expect a gospel choir made up of mostly black people to be better than a gospel choir made up of mostly white peple somehow a negative? Or that I am surprised if it turns out differently?

Prejudiced is not inherently a bad word. What you said was prejudiced.

The word prejudice refers to prejudgment, or forming an opinion before becoming aware of the relevant facts of a case. The word is often used to refer to preconceived, usually unfavorable, judgments toward people or a person because of gender, social class, age, disability, religion, sexuality, race/ethnicity, language, nationality or other personal characteristics. In this case, it refers to a positive or negative evaluation of another person based on their perceived group membership.[1] Prejudice can also refer to unfounded beliefs[2] and may include "any unreasonable attitude that is unusually resistant to rational influence."
